Since the introduction of the 3400 Family of Engines, the ratings of many of the engines have been increased, oil consumption has decreased, and the oil sump capacity has not changed. Because of those factors, the oil change interval should be reduced in severe applications to insure maximum reliability and service life.

Fuel usage can be an indicator for estimating the oil change interval. If the fuel usage exceeds the recommended maximums, a reduction in oil change interval (or additional sump capacity) is required. The 4W6412 Oil Cooler Decal has been revised to include the maximum fuel usage recommendations. A summary of the fuel usage recommendations is included in the chart. Caterpillar S·O·S analysis, including infrared analysis, will verify the oil's condition and its useful life for the engine's specific operating conditions.
