5P9722 Driver Needed To Install New Seal Assembly In Water Pumps{0622,1361}

Usage:

3208 Industrial, Marine and Truck Engines;
3204 Vehicular Engines;
D3 Tractors;
910 and 931 Loaders;
225 Excavators and 613B Tractors

A new design seal assembly is used in the water pumps for the above models. To install the seal assembly correctly, it is necessary to press (push) the seal assembly over the shaft and into the water pump housing. Also, a spring, which is a part of the seal assembly, must be compressed (pushed together) a specific distance. These operations must be done in one step with the use of a 5P9722 Driver and some of the special tools shown in Special Instruction Form SMHS7090, "Water Pump Reconditioning Using The 9N3139 Rebuild Kit and 5P7361 Tool Group". The tools needed are shown in the chart that follows and Illustrations 1 and 2:

Illustration 1. Additional tools needed.

If replacement of the 9N3141 Seal Assembly is necessary, or if the water pump is rebuilt, use the procedure that follows:

NOTE: If the water pump is equipped with a 9N3077 Pulley and the pump is to be rebuilt and used in a different installation, install a new 9N3899 Pulley and 5P9681 Bolt. The former bolt can cause interference (contact) with some optional or OEM accessory drive pulleys. If the water pump is to be used in the same or a similar installation, it is not necessary to install the new pulley and bolt.

Disassembly Of Water Pump

1. Use the Service Manual for the respective models to remove the water pump.

2. Hold the water pump shaft in a vise. Remove the bolt that fastens the pulley or fan drive adapter to the shaft. Remove the pulley or fan drive adapter (Illustration 3).

3. Use the 1P529 Handle, 1P460 Plate and a press to remove the shaft, seal and impeller assembly (Illustration 4).

4. Remove the bearing and spacer from the pulley end of the water pump (Illustrations 5 and 6).

5. Use 1P1861 Pliers to remove the retainer ring for the bearing on the impeller end of the water pump (Illustration 7). Remove the bearing.

6. Use a press and a 5P7354 Pin to remove the shaft and seal assembly from the impeller (Illustration 8).

7. Temporarily install the shaft and seal assembly into the water pump housing. Do not install the bearings at this time. Use a 5P7354 Pin and a press or hammer to remove the shaft from the seal. Throw the old seal away.

Assembly Of Water Pump

1. Install the bearing, retaining ring, pulley end bearing and spacer in the water pump.

2. Turn the water pump housing over. Be sure the spacer is in the center of the bearing bores. Install the shaft through the bearings and spacer from the impeller end of the water pump.

NOTE: The shaft-to-bearing fit can be .0007" (0.017 mm) loose to .0003" (0.007 mm) tight.

3. Install the pulley or fan drive adapter. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 55 lb ft (75 N·m).

4. Put the new 9N3141 Seal Assembly on the end of the shaft (Illustration 9).

5. Use a press and the 5P9722 Driver to push the seal assembly over the shaft and into the water pump housing.

Illustration 10. Install correct spacers between impeller and water pump housing.

NOTICE

Do not use a hammer to install the seal assembly.

6. On 3208 Engines, put a 5P7352 Spacer between the impeller and water pump housing (Illustration 10).

On 3204 Vehicular Engines, put a 5P7350 and 5P7352 Spacer between the impeller and water pump housing.

NOTE: The impeller on some water pumps for 3204 Vehicular Engines is not machined on the back. These impellers must be removed before the existing tools can be used to install the new seal assembly. Identification of the impellers that are not machined is as follows: Any impeller with a "9N139X" or "3Y4717" on the back must be removed and a new impeller installed. All service replacement impellers are machined on the back. Add this information to Step 3 of the disassembly instructions in Special Instruction SMHS7090.

7. Put a 5P7353 Spacer on the impeller and slowly press (push) the impeller onto the shaft until the spacer between the housing and impeller can just be moved.

NOTE: Be sure to do Step 7 very slowly. If the impeller is pressed on too tightly, use Steps 8, 9 and 10.

8. If the 5P7352 and/or 5P7350 Spacers cannot be removed, remove the pulley or fan drive adapter.

9. With the 1P529 Handle, 1P460 Plate and a press, very carefully push the water pump shaft enough to release the force that holds the spacers between the impeller and water pump housing.

10. Install the pulley or fan drive adapter again, and tighten the bolt to a torque of 55 lb ft (75 N·m).
