Removal Procedure

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the components to cool.

  1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or for disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".

  1. Remove bolts (2) .

  1. Disconnect tube assembly (1) and remove the gasket (not shown).

  1. Loosen clamp assembly (4) and remove tube assembly (1) .

  1. Disconnect flame detection temperature sensor (3) .

  1. Remove bolt (5) and clamp (6) .

  1. Disconnect cable assembly (7) and (8) .

  1. Remove bolt (9) and disconnect the cable assembly.

  1. Disconnect hose assemblies (10) and remove spark plug (11) .

  1. Remove nuts (12) and spacers (13) .

  1. Remove combustion head (14) and remove gasket (15) .

  1. Remove tube (17) and remove gasket (16) .

  1. Remove studs (18) .

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Check the O-ring seals, the gaskets, and the seals for wear or for damage. Replace the components, if necessary.

  1. Install tube (17) .

  1. Apply Tooling (A) to the threads of studs (18) . Install studs (18) with the end that is marked "X" in the Up position. Tighten studs (18) to a torque of 17 ± 2 N·m (12.5 ± 1.5 lb ft).

  1. Install gasket (16) and install tube (17) .

  1. Install gasket (15) and install combustion head (14) .

  1. Apply Tooling (A) onto the threads of the studs and nuts (12) . Install spacers (13) and nuts (12) . Tighten nuts (12) in a crisscross pattern to a torque of 23 ± 3 N·m (17 ± 2 lb ft). Tighten nuts (12) again in a crisscross pattern to a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft). Tighten nuts (12) again in a crisscross pattern to a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft).

  1. Connect hose assemblies (10) .

  1. Install spark plug (11) . Tighten spark plug (11) to a torque of 47 ± 4 N·m (35 ± 3 lb ft).

  1. Position the cable assembly and install bolt (9) .

  1. Connect cable assembly (8) .

    Note: Ensure that cable assembly (7) is fully seated prior to installing clamp (6) .

    Note: Ensure that the ears of clamp (6) are facing upward.

  1. Position clamp (6) and install bolt (5) . Tighten bolt (5) to a torque of 3 ± .5 N·m (27 ± 5 lb in).

    Note: Ensure that the cable straps are installed at point (X) in order to keep the cable assemblies away from the combustion head.

  1. Position tube assembly (1) and the gasket (not shown).

  1. Install bolts (2) and tighten clamp assembly (4) .

  1. Apply Tooling (A) to the threads of flame detection temperature sensor (3) and install the sensor.

  1. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance, "Refill Capacities" for the cooling system capacity.

  1. Perform the ARD ignition test. Refer to Troubleshooting Manual, "ARD Ignition - Test".
