- Vehicles which are registered in the state of California
- Vehicles which are primarily operated in the state of California
- Vehicles which are operated in states which adopt the regulations which are mandated by the state of California
Note: The following information does not apply to vehicles that are considered by the California Air Resources Board to be exempt. The following vehicles are exempt: buses, school buses, recreational vehicles, military tactical vehicles and authorized emergency vehicles. These vehicles will have CARB emissions films but extended idle times will not cause the engines to shut down.

CARB emissions film for an engine which is programmed with the ESS option |
The engine is subject to idling restrictions if the engine is equipped with this film.
The configuration that meets the certification for engine emissions is programmed at the factory. This configuration restricts idling by shutting down the engine at the following intervals:
- 5 minutes when the parking brake is activated
- 15 minutes when the parking brake is not activated
- 30 minutes while a regeneration of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) is occurring
The amber warning lamp flashes for 30 seconds prior to the engine shutdown. During this time, the timer for the engine shutdown resets if any transition of the following components occurs: clutch, brake, parking brake and accelerator pedal.
A shutdown occurs when the following engine conditions exist:
- The vehicle speed is zero mph.
- The temperature of the engine coolant is at least 60° F.
- The power take-off switch is in the OFF position.
Note: The emissions parameter is factory protected. The emissions parameter can not be changed.
Note: If the parking brake is not configured with the engine control module (ECM), the engine will shut down at 5 minutes or less. The timing of the shutdown is based on the parameter for the idle shutdown timer.
