Operating the machine with an unsafe distance between the machine and the remote operator can be dangerous and may result in severe injury or death. A safe operating distance must be maintained between the machine and the remote operator.

While operating under active remote control, the machine may move without warning which could result in serious personal injury or death. Maintain a safe distance from the machine when the machine is operated in remote control mode. Personnel who may need to work in the area of a remote control machine must know and understand the external remote control mode indicators, job site procedures, and approach the machine only when it is safe to do so.

If communication between the remote control machine and the operator station is lost, the machine will continue to execute the last valid command for 2.1 seconds. After a period of 2.1 seconds, the remote control machine will transition to an immediate stop state. The maximum expected travel distance, on level ground with no load, would be 4.2 m (14 ft) in forward and 5.5 m (18 ft) in reverse. Distances are based on a D10T in second gear forward or in reverse. Personal injury or death may occur if the machine travels into a hazard zone or towards personnel after losing communication. Maintain a safe distance from the machine. Maintain clear line-of-sight with the machine. Understanding the distances stated above, avoid situations that would place the machine in close proximity to the hazard zone, for example, pushing material over a high wall, or operating near infrastructure.

Before using the machine in remote control, perform a walk around inspection. Check the levels of the oil and water and check for leaks and damage.

Operate the machine manually to ensure that all the controls operate normally and the brakes operate effectively.

Be sure all personnel are clear of the equipment while the equipment is being lowered. Failure to stay clear of the equipment while the equipment is being lowered may result in personal injury.

Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact any Caterpillar dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

Do not service the machine while the machine is in remote mode. Failure to place the machine in manual mode for service can result in a crushing hazard. Death or injury may occur if the machine is in remote mode while servicing. Put the machine in manual mode. Verify that the machine is in manual mode prior to servicing the machine.

Personnel who are within the operation area of a remote control machine may be struck by the remote control machine. Being struck by a remote control machine may result in personal injury or death. Clearly mark the operation area for the remote control machine to warn personnel to stay clear of the operation area of the remote control machine. Ensure that personnel have an understanding of the mode indicators on the machine to know when safe to approach the machine.

Failure to use appropriate caution while operating the machine in remote mode can result in a potential crushing hazard and serious injury or death may occur. Operate in an open area away from other equipment and personnel until you become familiar with the controls.

Do not enter the area where the remote control machine is operating. Entering the area of a remote control machine while the machine is in remote control may result in serious injury or death. Stay clear of the area where the remote control machine is operating.

Machine Preparation

1. Park the machine in a convenient and safe location to start remote control operation.

2. Engage the Parking Brake on the machine.

3. Lower the Implements to the ground and engage the Hydraulic Lockout switch on the machine.

4. Turn off the machine Engine. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

   Do not attempt to access the ground level service center when the machine is in motion, the BLUE Remote Active indicator is flashing, or the BLUE Remote Active indicator is on solid. Serious injury or death may occur. Ask the remote control operator to place the implements on the ground, apply the implement lockout, and apply the parking brake before accessing the ground level service center.

5. Proceed to the Ground Level Service Center (GLSC) at the left fender of the machine.

6. Confirm that the Emergency Engine Shutdown switch (45) is in the OFF position.

7. Place the Manual/Remote mode switch (43) in the remote position.

   Note: With the engine running, placing the Manual/Remote mode switch in Remote mode will shut down the engine.

   NOTICE
   Stopping the engine immediately after it has been working under load, can result in overheating and accelerated wear of the engine components. Refer to the following procedure, to allow the engine to cool, and to prevent excessive temperatures in the turbocharger housing (if equipped), which could cause oil coking problems.

   Note: Refer to the "Stopping the Engine" section of the Operation and Maintenance Manual, M0069794, "Operation" chapter for Operator Console for more information on the "Cool Down" procedure.

8. Confirm the Blue Indicator Light on top of the machine is on, solid (not flashing).

Operator Console Pre Start Up Checks

1. Take note of the area around the machine and walk to the side of the machine about 15 m (50 ft) away.

2. Confirm that the Operator Console Commanded Stop switch (26) on the remote console is turned off, push in / turn the switch in the clockwise direction to disengage.

3. Turn the following switches to the default position.

   • "Implement Lockout" (10) ON

   • "Parking Brake" (12) ON

   • "Machine Power / Engine Crank" (11) OFF

   • "Implement Control" (9) CENTER

   • "Steering / Direction Control" (13) CENTER

   • "Fire Suppression" (18) OFF

4. Make sure that the operator console is upright.

   Note: The operator console has a built-in inclinometer which prevents operation when the console is tilted past 60 degrees in any direction.This safety feature was designed to shut down the system safely if the console was accidentally dropped or the operator tripped over on an object causing a loss of balance or fall while operating the console in the remote control mode

Scanning Command for Dozing Operator Console Access Card for Start Up

1. Ensure that the Parking Brake, the Implement Lockout, and the Machine Power switches are in the default states, and all controls are neutralized.

   Note: The console will link up to the receiver. However, no switches, buttons, or joysticks will be enabled until all switches are in the default state and all controls are neutralized.

2. Press Operator Console Power button (24) to power up the console.

3. Within 8 seconds, scan the Operator Console Access Card on the front-right corner of the Operator Console where the indicator label is. A dim Cat logo will appear until the Operator Console Access Card is swiped. The Cat logo will appear brighter when the card is successfully swiped.

   Note: If the Operator Console Access Card is not scanned within 8 seconds, the Operator Console will power off, and the procedure will require repeated.

Operator Console Start Up

1. The Software Stop LED (17) will be flashing on and off. If the communication link is successfully established with the receiver, the Status Display (3) will display a machine performance page and signal information will be displayed on the upper left corner.

2. Place the Machine Power / Engine Crank switch (11) on the operator console to the ON (center) position. Now, the Software Stop LED (17) on the Operator Console becomes inactive. Performance information will start to be come active on the Status Display (3).

3. Hold the horn button (25) on the operator console until the machines horn stops sounding (approximately 3 seconds).

   Note: At least once a day the action alarm on the Operator Console should be checked to be sure that the alarm is functional. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, M0069794, "Console Action Alarm Check" for more information.

4. Release the Horn button (25).

   The horn will sound and machine lights will flash two times.

   Note: The blue indicator light will now be blinking twice per second in a heartbeat (double beat) pattern. Once the flashing heartbeat occurs then the machine is in, remove control active mode.

   Note: The Software Stop LED (17) will blink with every horn sound from the machine. The Software Stop LED (17) will turn off following the second horn sound.

5. Push the Machine Power / Engine Crank switch (11) towards the crank icon and hold the switch in the crank position until the engine starts. After the engine starts release the switch.
