Installation Of Generator Sets On Rigid Bases{4450}

Usage:

All Generator Sets

When a single-bearing generator is correctly assembled to the flywheel and flywheel housing of the engine, the result is a rigid generator set unit that has good resistance to torque stresses. If the generator set is installed in the field on a rigid base (including a rail-type base, a fuel tank base or a concrete base), alignment with the base must be checked very carefully to prevent stresses in the generator set unit. Stresses can be caused by wrong shims or spacers, wrong alignment of mounting surfaces, or surfaces that are not flat or parallel. Flat, parallel surfaces are especially important for units that have supports at the engine flywheel housing in addition to the front and rear supports.

Stresses in the generator set unit caused by wrong alignment with the base can cause increased vibration and possibly damage the generator frame and/or the engine flywheel housing. For this reason, it is very important to use correct procedures and check the alignment carefully. Basic procedures for installation are given in Special Instruction Form GMG02382, "Alignment of Single Bearing Generators," but more complete procedures are now available and will be added in the next revision of the Special Instruction. Until this revision becomes available, the information given in "Industrial Division Engine Data Sheet" No. 73.2, May 1977, Form LEHQ1538 can be used. This Engine Data Sheet is a part of the Caterpillar Engine Technical Manual.
