(2) Parking brake pads (3) Parking brake disc (4) Front drive shaft |
The parking brake assembly, located where the front drive shaft meets the front differential, is a spring applied, hydraulically released disc type brake. Parking brake actuator (1) is equipped with a spring which compresses brake pads (2) against brake disc (3) to engage the parking brake. The parking brake is activated by pressing the parking brake switch in the cab, or by a loss of hydraulic pressure to the parking brake actuator.
Note: The parking brake can be manually released by removing the actuator cover and turning the actuator out to release spring pressure on the brake pads.

Dash instrument cluster and Caterpillar Monitoring System (6) Parking brake indicator |
A pressure switch on the parking brake control valve sends a signal to both the transmission electronic control module (ECM) and the Caterpillar Monitoring System. When the parking brake engages, the Caterpillar Monitoring System illuminates parking brake indicator (6). Should the transmission be in first gear in forward or reverse, the transmission ECM will automatically shift the transmission into NEUTRAL. If the machine is moving in forward or reverse in a gear higher than first, the transmission ECM will prevent parking brake activation.
