Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in order.

Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results 

1. Low Engine Oil Level

A. Check the engine oil level in the crankcase. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for calibration of the dipstick gauge. The oil level can possibly be too far below the oil pump supply tube. The oil pump cannot supply enough lubrication to the engine components.

 

Oil 

Result: The engine oil level is low.

Add engine oil in order to obtain the correct engine oil level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil" for the recommendations of engine oil.

Start the engine. Inspect the exterior of the engine for oil leaks. Repair any oil leaks.

Result: The engine oil is not low.

Proceed to Test Step 2.  

2. Check the Engine for the Correct Engine Oil

A. Make sure that the engine is supplied with the correct engine oil. For the correct engine oil to use, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
 

Oil 

Result: The engine has the correct engine oil.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

Result: The engine does not have the correct engine oil.

Replace the engine oil with the correct engine oil.

Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil" for the recommendations of engine oil.
 

3. Verify the Oil Temperature

A. Check the actual engine oil temperature with a calibrated test gauge. Compare the oil temperature reading from Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the reading on the test gauge.
 

Oil temperature 

Result: The test gauge does not match the temperature reading from Cat ET.

Replace the oil temperature sensor.

Result: The test gauge matches the temperature reading from Cat ET.

Proceed to Test Step 4.
 

4. Restriction in the Engine Oil Cooler Core

A. Check the engine oil cooler core for damage and for plugging.
 

Oil cooler 

Result: The engine oil cooler is not plugged or damaged.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

Result: The engine oil cooler is plugged or damaged.

Repair or replace the engine oil cooler.
 

5. Engine Oil Cooler Bypass Valve

A. Inspect the components of the engine oil cooler bypass valve for damage. Ensure that the bypass valve is not stuck in the open position.
 

Bypass valve 

Result: The engine oil cooler bypass valve is not damaged.

Proceed to Test Step 6.

Result: The engine oil cooler bypass valve is damaged.

Repair or replace the engine oil cooler bypass valve. If the symptom is corrected, return the unit to service.
 

6. High Engine Coolant Temperature

A. Check for high engine coolant temperatures.
 

Coolant temperatures 

Result: The engine coolant temperatures are high.

Refer to the symptom Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature Is High".
 

Complete the procedure in the order in which the steps are listed.

The procedure corrected the issue. Return the engine to service.

The procedure did not correct the issue.
