- Wheel Tractor-Scraper:
- 627H (S/N: DBW148-151,153,155-174,176-188,190-205,207)
Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
Field reports indicate the 6D-9467 Differential Ring Gear may fail due to the manufacturing process.
Solution
A field inspection can determine if the differential ring gear has proper heat treat preventing unscheduled machine down time.
Inspection can be performed in order to confirm differential ring gear hardness. Inspection is not necessary if the machine has over 500 hours and no operator complaint of rear differential noise.
If the machine has 75 hours or more, an oil sample can be obtained and tested and/or the pinion assembly can be physically inspected. For the physical inspection, perform the following procedure. If the machine has less than 75 hours, a physical inspection must be performed. Remove the pinion assembly. The pinion assembly can be removed without removal of the differential assembly from the machine. Perform the following procedure.
- Remove the scraper drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, KENR8883.
- Remove six bolts (B) to remove pinion assembly (A) .

- Verify that the differential ring gear has a Rockwell hardness of RKW C59 with a portable hardness tester and visual inspection of the gear teeth. Back face of gear or center of gear tooth side is acceptable.
