Adjustment Procedure for Bearing End Play
Note: Before you assemble the components, make sure that the bearing cups are seated in the housing and in the bearing cage. Also, make sure that the bearing cones are seated against the gear shoulders. Use a
Note: End play for input gear (3) and pump gear (4) is
Note: End play for output shaft (11) is not adjustable. The output gear must turn freely after installation.
Note: End play for idler gear (9) is not adjustable. The idler gear must turn freely after installation.
- Position housing (10) horizontally with the opening for bearing cage (7) at the top. Place input gear (3) in housing (10). Place bearing cage (7) on the housing. Do not use shims or seals.
- Install two bearing cage bolts (1) in bearing cage (7) at a 180 degree interval. Tighten the two bearing cage bolts finger tight. Alternately tighten each bearing cage bolt by one-fourth of a turn to an equal torque. Torque for the bearing cage bolts
28 N·m (20 lb ft) . - Rotate input gear (3) at least three turns or rotate input gear (3) until the input gear turns freely.
- Again, alternately tighten each bearing cage bolt to a torque of
28 N·m (20 lb ft) . - Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 until the bearing cage bolts do not move at a torque of
28 N·m (20 lb ft) and until the input gear does not turn freely after three turns. - Loosen the bearing cage bolts evenly. Tighten the bearing cage bolts finger tight. Do not move any other parts.
- With a tapered feeler gauge, measure gap (2) that is between housing (10) and bearing cage (7) in four places. Measure the gap at each bearing cage bolt and at 90 degrees from each bearing cage bolt.
- To find the total thickness of shims that are needed, add
0.03 to 0.08 mm (.001 to .003 inch) to the average of the four measurements in Step 7. - Remove bearing cage (7).
- Install the shims and the O-ring. Install the bearing cage. Torque the bearing cage bolts to the proper specification.
- To make sure that input gear (3) turns freely, rotate input gear (3).
Adjustment for the Secondary Steering Pump (if equipped)
- Position housing (10) horizontally with the opening for bearing cage (8) at the top. Place pump gear (4) in housing (10). Place bearing cage (8) on the housing. Do not use shims or seals.
- Install two bearing cage bolts (6) in bearing cage (8) at a 180 degree interval. Tighten the two bearing cage bolts finger tight. Alternately tighten each bearing cage bolt by one-fourth of a turn to an equal torque. Torque for the bearing cage bolts
14 N·m (10 lb ft) . - Rotate pump gear (4) at least three turns or rotate pump gear (4) until the pump gear turns freely.
- Again, alternately tighten each bearing cage bolt to a torque of
14 N·m (10 lb ft) . - Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 until the bearing cage bolts do not move at a torque of
14 N·m (10 lb ft) and until the pump gear does not turn freely after three turns. - Loosen the bearing cage bolts evenly. Tighten the bearing cage bolts finger tight. Do not move any other parts.
- With a tapered feeler gauge, measure gap (5) that is between housing (10) and bearing cage (8) in four places. Measure the gap at each bearing cage bolt and at 90 degrees from each bearing cage bolt.
- To find the total thickness of shims that are needed, add
0.03 to 0.08 mm (.001 to .003 inch) to the average of the four measurements in Step 7. - Remove bearing cage (8).
- Install the shims and the O-ring. Install the bearing cage. Torque the bearing cage bolts to the proper specification.
- To make sure that pump gear (4) turns freely, rotate pump gear (4).
