From the "Home Menu" the operator can select either the "Settings" or the "Service" menu.

The setup of the machine affects the parameters that are displayed. The attachments that are on the machine determine the software that is contained in the ECMs. Messenger looks at the software versions to determine the parameters that will be displayed and the parameters that will be variable.

Note: Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat® ET) is used to access the parameters.

The "Settings" menu option is entered by selecting "Settings" from the Main Menu. To select the "Settings" menu, press the up or down arrow button until "Settings" is highlighted. Then press the "OK" button. Refer to Illustration 1.

The menu options are displayed on the left half of the screen. The prompts are displayed on the right half of the screen. To adjust the associated parameters, press the UP arrow button or the DOWN arrow button until the desired category is highlighted. Then press the "OK" button to access the parameters in that category. Follow the prompts to adjust the available parameters.

The "Settings" menu organizes the variable parameters into four sections. These sections have adjustable parameters. The four sections follow:

  • Contrast

  • Backlight

  • Language

  • Units

From the "Display Setup" menu, use the appropriate up arrow button or the down arrow button to highlight the desired parameter. Press the "OK" button to allow access to the parameter screen. Follow the prompts to adjust the parameter. All the parameters in this category relate to operator preferences in regard to the Advisor display. The following parameters may be adjusted:

  • Language

  • Units

  • Contrast

  • Backlight

The language that is displayed is chosen on the Language screen. The standard languages are: English, German, Swedish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Other languages may be available. Refer to the software price list.

Units Setting

This screen allows the operator to choose conversions of the measurement. The following options are available: English and Metric.

Contrast Setting

The Contrast Setting Menu screen allows the operator to control the contrast of the screens.

Backlight

The "backlight" menu allows the operator to adjust the brightness of the display. By using the "Left" and "Right" buttons, the operator can adjust the brightness in 5% increments. Going left will make the display dimmer. Going right will brighten the display.

Lockout Status

The Service menu allows the operator or the technician to access the parameters of the machine. The operator or the technician may also make selections for viewing or clearing logged events or codes. The Service menu will allow the technician to view data for the following systems: Advisor, engine, implement, power train, messenger, VIMS and object detection system. The status of electronic components in the major machine systems can also be viewed.

The Service menu option is displayed by selecting "Service" from the Main Menu. Press the Left/Up arrow button or the Right/Down arrow button until "Service" is displayed. Then press the OK button.

The Service menu contains the following four menus:

  • Diagnostic Events

  • System Parameters

  • System Info

  • Lockout Status

The Diagnostic Events menu contains a list of all the diagnostics and events that are active and logged on the machine. Refer to Illustration 6.

The System Parameters menu will allow the technician to view the status of system components.

The System Info menu contains the following seven submenus:

  • Engine

  • Implement

  • Transmission

  • Advisor

  • Messenger

  • VIMS

  • ODS

To access the Service menu options, press the Left/Up arrow button or the Right/Down arrow button until the desired category is displayed. Then press the "OK" button. The following explains the usage of each menu option.

The Diagnostic Events menu option will show a complete list of all active and inactive event codes and diagnostic codes.

From the Service menu, use the appropriate arrow button to highlight the Diagnostic Events option. Then press the "OK" button in order to view a complete list of codes. Each line on the list will show the following information:

  • SRC (Source ID)

  • Code

  • OCC (Number of occurrences of the event or code)

  • Active or inactive code

From the Diagnostic List menu, use the appropriate arrow button in order to highlight a diagnostic code or an event code on the list. Then press the "OK" button in order to display the codes Detailed View. The Detailed View will display a text message that shows the following information: identity of the reporting ECM, identity of the "failed component code (CID)" and explanation of the event.

System Parameters

The System Parameters menu will allow the technician to view the status of system components.

From the Service menu, use the appropriate arrow button to display the System Parameters option. Then press the "OK" button to access the System Parameters option. From there the operator will be able to choose to sort the components by ECM or by type.

If the operator chooses to sort by ECM, then the following options are available:

  • Engine

  • VIMS

  • Transmission

  • Implement

If the operator chooses to sort by type, then the following options are available:

  • Temperatures

  • Pressures

  • Speeds

  • Filter Switches

  • Operator Inputs

  • Positions

  • Solenoids and Relays

  • Levels

  • Performance

  • Other

From the System Parameters menu, use the appropriate arrow button to display the desired category. Then press the "OK" button in order to access the list of parameters in that category.

The System Parameters menu option allows the user to display additional information on the machine. From the Service menu, use the appropriate arrow button to display the System Parameters option. Then press the "OK" button to access the System Parameters menu. Messenger will display the following additional information:

  • Engine Coolant Temperature

  • Atmospheric Pressure
