The CID 1558 FMI 09 diagnostic code is associated with the communication between the Implement ECM and the Relay Driver Module. The communication is conducted on the Cat Data Link circuit or the communication that is conducted over the SAE J1939 CAN A Data Link circuit.
The FMI 09 means that the Implement ECM is not receiving any communication from the Relay Driver Module on the involved data link circuit.
A "companion" diagnostic code is activated when the diagnostic code is activated by the Implement ECM. The "companion" diagnostic code indicates the data link that is involved. The "companion" diagnostic code that has been activated will be either of the following diagnostic codes:
CID 0247 FMI 09 - SAE J1939 Data Link
CID 0248 FMI 09 - Cat Data Link
Determine the "companion" code that is activated simultaneously with the CID 1558 FMI 09 diagnostic code to determine which data link is involved.
The "companion" code of the data link is cleared when the CID 1558 FMI 09 diagnostic code is cleared.
The possible causes of the CID 1558 FMI 09 diagnostic code are listed below:
- Terminating resistors on the J1939 CAN A Data Link are faulty
- An ECM or smart device is not powering up
- Lack of key switch input to an ECM or smart device (where applicable)
- Excessive noise on the data link circuit
- An open or a poor connection in the data link circuit
- Software configuration mismatch
- The Relay Driver Module has failed. This condition is unlikely.
- The Implement ECM has failed. This condition is unlikely.
Note: A loss of power in the system to the Relay Driver Module can cause the Implement ECM to activate this diagnostic code. Ensure that the Relay Driver Module is powered up before proceeding with this procedure.
Note: Ensure that the CID 1558 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.
Test Step 1. DETERMINE THE DATA LINK COMPANION CODE THAT IS ACTIVE
- Check the list of active diagnostic codes in order to determine the "companion" diagnostic codes that are active:
CID 0247 FMI 09 - SAE J1939 Data Link
CID 0248 FMI 09 - Cat Data Link
Results:
- OK - Both the CID 0247 FMI 09 and the CID 0248 FMI 09 codes are active, check power to the Relay Driver Module

- OK - The CID 0248 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active indicating that the problem is in the Cat Data Link. In order to perform the troubleshooting procedure for the Cat Data Link, proceed to the diagnostics for CID 0248 FMI 09.
- OK - The CID 0247 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active indicating that the problem is in the SAE J1939 CAN A Data Link. In order to perform the troubleshooting procedure for the SAE J1939 CAN A Data Link, proceed to the diagnostics for CID 0247 FMI 09.
