Usage:

All Air Conditioning Systems With Space For A Larger Dryer

SUPPLEMENT: 09/22/86

SERVICE MAGAZINE, JULY 7, 1986, PAGE 15, "Larger Capacity Air Conditioner Receivers (Dryers) Available With Quick Disconnect Fittings". Add a Note to this article to use the new Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, SENR3334.

Also, change the second subtopic to read, "Installing The New Dryer In Place Of Another Dryer With Quick Disconnect Fittings".

The procedure under the second subtopic is only for replacing a dryer that has quick disconnect fittings. If this procedure is followed with a dryer that has ordinary tube and O-ring fittings, the refrigerant will be discharged.

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Two, new air conditioner dryers are available for air conditioning systems that have enough space to accommodate the new, larger dryer. Both dryers can absorb more moisture than the former dryers and thus are larger. Each dryer has quick disconnect fittings so they can be replaced without discharging the system. (One of these larger dryers is a 9W549 Dryer and it has been available as an attachment for D11N Tractors since first production.)

The dryer should be replaced once a year, or whenever the system is opened for repair. This reduces the chance of system failure due to desiccant breakdown.

An 8T8642 Dryer without a low-pressure cutout switch and a 9W549 Dryer with a cutout switch are available. If your existing dryer has a cutout switch, use the 9W549 Dryer. Two, 9W616 Disconnect Fittings are needed with either dryer. These connect to female tube and O-ring connectors.

Either dryer can be installed in any system if there is enough space for the larger dryer and the two disconnect fittings. The new dryers are 106 mm (4.2") diameter and 199 mm (7.9") high.

Installing The New Dryer In Place Of The Former Dryer Without Discharging The System

1. Check the system for correct operation and for leaks. If you find any leaks, repair them, install the new dryer, and evacuate and recharge the system. Disregard the rest of this procedure.

2. If no leaks are found, disconnect the inlet fitting of the former dryer.

3. With the engine at low idle, run the air conditioner for one minute. This will pump most of the refrigerant out of the former dryer.

4. Disconnect outlet fitting on former dryer.

5. Stop the engine immediately.

6. Connect the outlet fitting of the new dryer to the line.

7. Wait several minutes to permit the pressure to equalize. (This makes Step 8 much easier.)

8. Connect the inlet fitting of the new dryer to the line.
