Description of Change: A new flexible coupling group is used with 7211 Marine Transmissions installed on 3408 Marine Engines. The rubber elements of the former coupling could become brittle and disintegrate after approximately 5000 to 7000 hours of use. This could result in metal to metal contact in the coupling which would allow engine torsional vibrations to reach the marine transmission. The torsional vibrations could cause pitting or spalling on the marine transmission pinion gears. The new flexible coupling has increased horsepower capacity and will provide increased service life.
Adaptable As: The new 2W8997 Coupling Group is adaptable as a direct replacement for the former 1W6310 Coupling Group on 7211 Marine Transmissions used with 3408 Marine Engines. The components of the new 2W8997 Coupling Group are shown in the illustration and listed in the chart.
Components of the 2W8997 Coupling Group.
When installing a 2W8997 Coupling Group, put the 2W8995 Coupling Assembly in position on the transmission input shaft before installing the 2W8996 Hub. The bolts and washers that were used to fasten the drive ring for the 1W6310 Coupling Group to the flywheel can be used to fasten the 2W8995 Coupling Assembly to the flywheel. These bolts are to be installed last, one at a time, through the air vent hole in the transmission front cover.
