Connections of the winch spool in solenoid

This diagnostic code is associated with the winch spool (reel) in solenoid. The FMI 05 means that the ECM has determined that an open in the circuit exists.

The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:

  • The energize circuit of the solenoid is open.

  • The return circuit of the solenoid is open.

  • The solenoid has failed.

  • The ECM has failed. An ECM failure is unlikely.

Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 1884 - FMI 05 is active before performing this procedure.

Note: Use a digital multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.

Test Step 1. Check the solenoid

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

  1. Disconnect the winch solenoid bulkhead from the machine harness.

  1. At the machine harness connector for the winch solenoid bulkhead, place a jumper wire from contact "7" wire (176-YL) to contact "8" wire (F869-PK).

  1. Observe the status of the diagnostic code.

Expected Result:

The diagnostic code remains active. Then, the diagnostic code changes from FMI 05 to FMI 06 after the jumper wire is installed.

Results:

  • YES - The diagnostic code remains active. The jumper wire does not affect the diagnostic code. Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • NO - The diagnostic is no longer active. The problem is inside the winch.

Repair: Troubleshoot the components inside the winch. Refer to SENR8463.

    STOP

Test Step 2. Check the harness for an open

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the ECM.

  1. The jumper wire that was installed in the previous test remains in place.

  1. At the machine harness connector, measure the resistance from signal contact 7 wire (176-YL) to contact 8 wire (F869-PK).

Expected Result:

The resistance is less than 5 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • NO - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The resistance measurement is not correct. There is an open circuit in the machine harness.

Repair: The open is in wire (176-YL) or in wire (F869-PK) of the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 3. Check the operation of the ecm

The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the OFF position. The machine harness connector for the solenoid and the ECM connectors remain disconnected.

  1. Remove the jumper wire that was installed in the last test step.

  1. At the J1 connector for the ECM, use a wire removal tool to remove wire (F869-PK) from contact J1-11.

  1. Reconnect the machine harness connectors to the ECM.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Use a multimeter probe to make a connection with the ECM at contact J1-11 through the empty space in the J1 connector.

  1. Observe the status of the diagnostic code. Ground the other end of the multimeter probe to frame ground.

Expected Result:

The FMI 05 changes to an FMI 06 when the pin is grounded at contact J1-11.

Results:

  • YES - The FMI 05 changes to anFMI 06 when the pin is grounded at contact J1-11. The ECM has responded correctly to the condition of a grounded circuit. The operation of the ECM is correct. Reinstall the disconnected wire into the correct spot in the ECM connector before proceeding to the next Test Step. Proceed to Test Step 4.

  • NO - The FMI 05 remains active. The status of the active diagnostic code does not change when contact J1-11 is grounded.

Repair: The ECM has not responded correctly to the condition of a grounded circuit. The operation of the ECM is not correct.Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM requires replacing, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP

Test Step 4. Check the status of the diagnostic code

  1. Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors and check the wires for damage to the insulation. Damage is caused by excessive heat, corrosion, or chafing.

  1. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the circuit.

  1. Reconnect all harness connectors in order to make sure that the connectors are fully seated. Also, make sure that the clips for each connector are fastened.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Operate the machine.

  1. Determine if the CID 1884 - FMI 05 diagnostic code is active.

Expected Result:

The CID 1884 - FMI 05 diagnostic code is not active.

Results:

  • YES - The CID 1884 - FMI 05 diagnostic code is not active. The problem does not exist at this time.

Repair: The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.

    STOP

  • NO - The CID 1884 - FMI 05 diagnostic code is active.

Repair: An ECM failure is unlikely. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your technical communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
