Personal Computer to UPS Connection

Usage:

Personal Computer (PC) to Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS) Connection

The following instructions explain the process in order to connect a PC to a UPS with a serial connection.

SMS

  1. De-energize the system. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR9988, "SMS System Shutdown".

  2. Remove the sheet metal panel to access the system I/O isolation board (SIO).

  3. Connect a PC to the system RS232/RS485 port that is located on the SIO. Ensure that the jumper "JMP1" is in the correct position. The high/up position is for RS485 and the low/down position is for RS232.

  4. Follow the steps in "Common".

MMS

  1. De-energize the system. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR9988, "MMS System Shutdown".

  2. Connect a PC to the parallel cabinet interface "(PCI)" in the system cabinet. Turn the UPSView switch to the position for the desired MMU.

  3. Proceed to the "Common" section.

Common

  1. Energize the system according to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR9988, "SMS System Startup" for the SMS systems or Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR9988, "MMS System Startup" for the MMS systems.

  2. Start your PC.

  3. Run the UPSView software by double clicking the icon on your PC.

  4. Click over "PC Settings" in the menu bar.

  5. Click "Settings" in the "PC Settings" menu. The "UPSView Connection Settings" window will open.

  6. Check the "Direct Connect (serial)" radio button.

  7. Select your "PC COM Port" for the "Serial Connection" and check the baud rate. The radio button for "Detailed MMU telemetry" must be checked.

  8. Select the "Serial/Modem Port Number" that is appropriate for the PC.

  9. Select the "Serial/Modem Baud Rate" that is desired. The default is 38400.

  10. Ensure that the "Detailed Telemetry" radio button is selected.

  11. Click the "OK" button.

  12. Click "Connection" in the menu bar.

  13. Click "Connect" in the "Connection" menu.

    The PC is now connected to the (UPS). Text and flywheel telemetry will be displayed in UPSView. If text and flywheel telemetry are not displayed, check the "Serial/ Modem Port Number" and the "Direct Connect (serial)" radio button for the proper settings.

  14. Once a connection is established, Click "Enter Password" in the menu bar. The "Enter User Name / Password" dialog will open.

  15. Enter a "User Name".

  16. Enter a "Password".

  17. Click the "OK" button.

    After the "User Name" and "Password" have been accepted by the (UPS), the menu bar will change to include "Op. Params.", "Calibrate" and "Clear Password".
