Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
8H-9189 Dowel (2) in bottom manifold (1) may come loose. This can cause dowel (2) and stop (3) to fall out resulting in the loss of a gear. Track-Type Tractors, Wheel Dozers, and Wheel Loaders will lose second gear. Load Haul Dump will lose first gear and third gear.
The symptoms can be either the sudden loss of a gear or abnormal noise when operating in the gears that are mentioned above. The control valve should be inspected before the transmission is removed from the machine. If dowel (2) and stop (3) do fall out and are found in the control valve mounting area, there is likely no need to inspect the planetary of the transmission.
If the dowel and stop have fallen out, contact the Dealer Solution Network (DSN) for corrective action.
