Functions of the VIMS® Onboard system and the VIMS Off-Board System

The Loader Payload System that is used on large wheel loaders is a subsystem of the Vital Information Management System (VIMS®). The system is more than a device used to measure payload weight. The features of the system allow accumulated data to be downloaded. The data can then be used to help manage the loader and the truck fleet. This manual has been developed as a resource tool for use at all levels: (machine operator, service technician and management personnel). This manual has five sections. These sections have been grouped into two areas:

Onboard

Functions that are used during the setup and the operation of the Loader Payload System at the machine level. These functions are set by using the Advisor.

The following onboard functions are covered in this manual:

Basic Operation - This section gives a general overview of the payload system. This section also provides the information that is listed here: basic information that is needed for the setup of the payload system and a guide for the operation of the payload system for a new user.

Operating The System - This section provides a comprehensive overview of the operation of the Loader Payload System.

Calibration - This section provides detailed step-by-step instructions on performing the calibration of the Loader Payload System.

OFF-BOARD

These functions require the use of a computer and software programs. The software programs are designed to perform the functions that are listed below to the onboard VIMS information and the machine configurations.

  • Communicate with the machine.

  • Analyze the onboard data.

  • Modify the machine information.

The following off-board functions are covered in this manual:

VIMSpc Service Tool Software - This section provides instruction on downloading the payload information from the onboard system and generating and interpreting the payload reports.

The Loader Payload System calculates the weight of the payload in the bucket. The weight of the payload is based on the relationship between the position of the boom and the corresponding pressure in the lift cylinders. The pressure in the lift cylinders is sampled over a specific range. This range is known as the Weigh Range. The system stores the weight of each bucket in onboard memory.

During loading, the current bucket and truck weights are displayed on the Advisor. Data about the bucket load is stored automatically. When the truck is loaded, the operator must press a Store button in order to store the truck's payload information in the onboard memory. When a Store button is pressed, the optional horn is sounded. The horn signals the truck to proceed.

Typical Payload Cycle

Once the payload information is stored there are three ways to access the data:

  1. The Advisor displays the payload information. Refer to the Systems Operation, "Operating System" Section of this manual.

  1. "VIMS-PC Payload reports". Refer to the Systems Operation, "VIMS-PC Software" section of this manual.

Broadcast (Telemetry System)

Payload information can be broadcast via the telemetry system to an off-board recording system through the same RS-232 serial port that supports the printer.

Refer to the Service Manual, KENR8255, "Vital Information Management System (VIMS)" for troubleshooting information.

VIMS Service Tool Software

The VIMS off-board software provides the ability to perform the functions that are listed below:

  • Download the data from the VIMS onboard system.

  • Analyze the data from the VIMS onboard system.

The VIMS off-board software programs that are used to process payload information are listed here:

VIMS-PC

Communicate - This program enables communication between the service tool software and the VIMS onboard system.

Analysis - This program is used to analyze the payload information.

VIMSpc

VIMSpc is a stand-alone program that performs all of the functions that are listed below:

  • Communicate with the VIMS onboard system.

  • Analyze the payload information.

The Payload information that is stored in onboard memory needs to be downloaded on a regular basis. This is accomplished with the service tool that is loaded with VIMS off-board software. For more information, refer to the Systems Operation, "VIMSpc Onboard Configuration" Section of this manual.
