New Engine Software Provides the Engine Idle Management System {1901, 1902, 7620}

Usage:

980G II AWH
Wheel Loader:
980G Series II (S/N: AXG1-UP; AWH1-UP; AYT1-UP)

Description of Change: New software is being used on the 980G Series II. The new software will provide additional features for the Engine Idle Management System.

Adaptable To: The new software is effective with 980G Series II AXG1360-UP. The new software is adaptable to the machines that are listed above.

The new 265-8922 Engine Ratings Electronic Software replaces 248-1411 Engine Ratings Electronic Software on the 980G Series II.

The new engine software will provide the following new features for the Engine Idle Management System (EIMS).

  • Hibernate mode

  • Work mode

  • Warm up mode

  • Low voltage mode

New Features of the Engine Idle Management System

The EIMS software comes with four idle control settings: Hibernate Mode, Work Mode, Low Voltage Mode and Warm Up Mode. If any diagnostics are present after programming the software the calibration will need to be completed. The EIMS strategy will not start until the machine has come out of cold start-up mode with the exception of the Low Voltage Mode.

Hibernate Mode

The Hibernate Mode is designed to provide lower fuel consumption, sound reduction and reduced emission levels. This is especially effective in applications when machines have high idle time. Fuel consumption savings will vary by the machine model and work application.

The Hibernate Mode is engaged when the following conditions are met.

Initial Conditions

  • The transmission is in neutral.

  • The parking brake is set.

  • The throttle pedal is depressed 5% or less.

Secondary Conditions

  • The current for the fan is greater than 0.8 amp.

  • Ten seconds have elapsed since the initial conditions are met.

Once the initial and secondary conditions are met, the engine idle speed will go to the programmed speed for the hibernate mode. Within the engine software, the factory default for the low idle Hibernate Mode is set at 600 RPM. The machine can be automatically reset to working idle speed with one of the following actions.

  • The release of the parking brake

  • A directional shift of the machine

  • A push of the governor pedal

In Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), the programmable range for the low idle speeds in Hibernate Mode range from 600 RPM to 800 RPM. The setting is found in the engine configuration screen. Adjustment on the setting can be made through the "Low Idle-Hibernate" parameter.

Work Mode

The Work Mode is designed to allow flexibility in setting the working engine idle speed to the customer's applications requirements. The factory default for the Work Mode idle speed is 800 RPM for the 980G Series II. In Caterpillar ET, the programmable range for the working engine idle speed is 650 RPM to 1000 RPM. The setting is found in the engine configuration screen. Adjustment can be made through the "Low Idle-Work" parameter.

Warm Up Mode

The Warm Up Mode is designed to keep the engine and the machine warmer in cold weather operations.

The Warm Up Mode will not become active until the following conditions are met.

Initial Conditions

  • The transmission is in neutral.

  • The parking brake is set.

  • The throttle pedal is depressed 5% or less.

Secondary Conditions

  • Ten minutes have elapsed since the initial conditions are met.

Note: This secondary condition is only required for the first time when the warm up mode is engaged.

  • Coolant temperature is less than 70° C.

  • Inlet Manifold temperature is less than 5° C.

Note: This secondary condition is only required for the first time when the warm up mode is engaged.

Once the initial and secondary conditions are met the engine idle speed will increase to 1100 RPM. This will generate additional heat from the engine. The machine will come out of Warm Up Mode once the coolant temperature reaches 80° C or the inlet manifold temperature reaches 15° C. The machine can be automatically reset to working idle speed with one of the following actions.

  • The release of the parking brake

  • A directional shift of the machine

  • A push of the governor pedal

Warm Up Mode can be entered into any number of consecutive times after start-up. The machine may come out of Warm Up Mode because of an increase in the coolant temperature. The machine may also come out of Warm Up Mode because of an increase in the inlet manifold temperature. After this occurs, Warm Up Mode will only be entered when the coolant temperature drops below 70° C, and one minute has elapsed since meeting the initial conditions.

The factory default for the warm up mode on the 980G Series II will be set to "disable". This feature can be enabled or this feature can be disabled with Caterpillar ET in the engine configuration screen by changing the "Cold Elev Enb" parameter. Until updates are made to Caterpillar ET, the following codes will be required in order to change the status of this feature: 3072 (enable) and 3328 (disable).

Low Voltage Mode

The Low Voltage Mode is designed to reduce the risk of fully discharging the batteries. This feature is standard on all machines with EIMS software. This feature will become active in applications when the electrical current drain is high due to extremely high electrical loads from attachments.

The Low Voltage Mode will not become active until the following conditions are met.

Initial Conditions

  • The transmission is in neutral.

  • The parking brake is set.

  • The throttle pedal is depressed 5% or less.

Secondary Conditions

  • Five minutes have elapsed since the initial conditions are met.

  • Battery voltage is less than 24.5 volts.

Once the initial and secondary conditions are met the engine speed will ramp up to 1100 RPM in order to charge the battery.

The machine can be automatically reset to working idle speed with one of the following actions.

  • The release of the parking brake

  • A directional shift of the machine

  • A push of the governor pedal
