Water Pump - Remove - Engine in Chassis

Usage:

980G II AWH

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.

Steam can cause personal injury.

Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.

Note: Put identification on all lines, hoses, wires, and tubes for installation purposes. Use caps and plugs on all lines, hoses, and tubes in order to prevent fluid loss or contamination of the systems.

  1. Open the engine hood. The water pump is located on the left side of the machine.

  1. Open the engine side panel on the left side of the machine.

  1. Drain the cooling system. The capacity of the cooling system is 81 L (21 US gal). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7362, "980G Series II Wheel Loader", "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".

  1. Loosen the hose clamps which hold two hoses (1) in place. Remove two hoses (1) .

  1. Loosen the hose clamp which holds hose (2) in place. Remove hose (2) .

  1. Loosen the hose clamp which holds hose (3) in place. Remove hose (3) .

  1. Remove bolt (4) which holds bracket (6) in place.

  1. Remove two bolts (5) and remove bonnet (7) .

  1. Loosen hose clamp (8) and remove hose (9) .

  1. Remove four bolts (11) which hold water pump cover (10) in place. Remove water pump cover (10) .

  1. Remove the O-ring seal between water pump cover (10) and water pump (12) .

  1. Remove three bolts (13) and remove cover (14) .

  1. Remove five bolts (15) and remove water pump (12) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (16) from water pump (12) .
