Start By:

  1. Remove the left final drive, the steering differential, and the brake. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive, Steering Differential, and Brake (Left Side) - Remove" in this module.

  1. Remove three bolts and washers (1).

  2. Remove two bolts (2).

    Note: The planetary carrier weighs 48 kg (105 lb).

  3. Install tool (A) and a hoist.

  4. Remove sliding carrier (3).

  5. Remove tool (A).

  6. Remove the remaining two bolts (2) and slinger (4) from planetary carrier (7).

  7. Remove retaining ring (5), the thrust ring, and planetary carrier (7) from ring gear (6).

  8. Remove seal ring (9) from carrier (7).

  9. Use a hammer and a punch to push pin (10) in shaft (8).

  10. Remove shaft (8), planetary gear (11), discs (13), and bearing (12) from planetary carrier (7).

  11. Remove pin (10) from shaft (8).

  12. Repeat Steps 9 through 11 for the three remaining planetary gears.

  13. Remove sun gear (14) from planetary carrier (15).

  14. Remove three bolts (16), plate (17), and gear (18) from the carrier.

  15. Use tool (B) to compress the retaining ring that holds carrier (15) in ring gear (6).

  16. Separate carrier (15) from ring gear (6).

  17. Remove the retaining ring from carrier (15).

  18. Use a hammer and a punch to push pin (20) in shaft (19).

  19. Remove shaft (19), planetary gear (21), discs (23), and bearing (22) from planetary carrier (15).

  20. Remove pin (20) from shaft (19).

  21. Repeat Steps 18 through 20 for the two remaining planetary gears.

  22. Place a bolt in the teeth of pinion gear (24) in order to prevent movement.

  23. Bend the tang on lock washer (26) away from nut (28).

  24. Use tool (C) to remove nut (28) from the pinion.

  25. Remove lockwasher (26) and washer (25) from the pinion.

  26. Remove the bolt and the washer (27).

  27. Remove carrier (29) from the support bracket.

  28. Use tool (D) to force pinion (24) from bearing cone (30) and carrier (29).

  29. Use tool (E) to remove bearing cone (31) from pinion (24).

  30. Remove bearing cups (32) from carrier (29).

  31. Remove twelve bolts and washers (33).

  32. Remove support bracket (34) and shims (35) from the housing.

  33. Remove eighteen bolts and washers (36).

  34. Remove bevel gear (37) from housing (38).

    Note: The brake housing weighs 150 kg (335 lb).

  35. Attach tool (F) and a hoist to brake housing (39).

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.

    Spring force will be released when covers are removed.

    Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.


  36. Remove two bolts and washers (40).

  37. Remove brake housing (39) from the final drive housing (41).

  38. Remove three bolts and washers (42).

  39. Remove retainer (52) and thrust washer (51).

  40. Remove hub (48), four friction discs (43), and the three brake plates.

  41. If necessary, remove ring (44) from hub (48).

  42. Remove thrust washer (54).

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.

    Spring force will be released when covers are removed.

    Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.


  43. Remove six bolts and washers (45) slowly. Remove six bolts and washers (45) evenly.

  44. Remove retainer (50), piston (57), spring (56), ring (55), and O-ring seal (59) from brake housing (39).

  45. Remove shuttle valve (67).

  46. Remove seal ring (53) from retainer (50).

  47. Remove ring (60) and seal ring (58) from piston (57).

  48. Remove six bolts and washers (46) and remove plate (49) and shims (47).

  49. Use tool (G) to separate brake housing (39) and bearing cone (61) from housing (38).

  50. Remove bearing cone (61).

    Note: Brake housing (39) weighs 77 kg (170 lb). Housing (38) weighs 25 kg (55 lb).

  51. Attach a hoist and tool (F) to brake housing (39).

  52. Remove brake housing (39) from housing (38).

  53. If necessary, remove bearing cone (62) from housing (38).

  54. Remove bearing cups (63) and (65), spacer (66), and retaining ring (64) from brake housing (39).
