627G and 637G Wheel Tractor-Scrapers Power Train Electronic Control System Caterpillar

MID 031 - CID 1326 - FMI 02

Usage:

637G AWE
Conditions Which Generate This Code:

This diagnostic code is recorded when the software location code for the power train ECM does not match the hard wired location codes. The most probable cause of this diagnostic code happens when a service person flashes an ECM with the wrong software.

Note: Do not change the hard wired location code if you have flashed the incorrect software into the ECM.

Test Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS.

  1. Verify that the part number for the scraper's ECM is correct.

Expected Result:

Consult the Business Unit that is producing the product for the correct machine configurations.

Results:

  • OK - All part numbers are correct. Proceed to test step 2.

  • NOT OK - All part numbers are NOT correct. The installed power train ECM has the wrong part number or incorrect configuration software.

Repair: Replace the incorrect ECM with a module that has the correct configuration software.

    Stop.

Test Step 2. THE LOCATION CODE SHOULD MATCH THE ET SUMMARY SCREEN.

  1. Check the ET summary screen for the location code.

Expected Result:

The location codes in the ET are correct.

Results:

  • OK - The location code in the ET is correct. Proceed to test step 3.

  • NOT OK - The location code is NOT correct.

Repair: Verify that the software and hardware part numbers are correct. If the numbers are OK exit this procedure. If the numbers are not correct, exit this procedure and correct the problem.

    Stop.

Test Step 3. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTIONS.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Inspect the harness connections that are related to the location code. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.

  1. Check the mating of the connectors.

  1. Check the wires at the connector.

  1. Check each wire for nicks or signs of abrasion in the insulation.

  1. Check for moisture at the connector.

  1. Check for dirty contacts or corroded contacts.

  1. Check each pin and check each socket.

Expected Result:

The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion.

Results:

  • OK - The machine harness connectors are tight and free from corrosion. All part numbers are correct. Proceed to test step 4.

  • NOT OK - The machine harness connectors are in the need of repair.

Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness.

    Stop.

Test Step 4. CHECK FOR SHORTS TO GROUND

  1. The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness from the power train ECM.

  1. At the machine harness for the power train ECM, measure the resistance between frame ground and the contacts of the location code.

Note: The following table describes the connections of the location codes.

    Table 1
    Location Code
Hardware Location Code     Scraper's Power Train ECM     Tractor's Power Train ECM     Contact
    ET Location Code     2     1     -
    "LOC Enable"     +24 DCV     +24 DCV     J1-28
    LOC 0     Open     Ground     J1-22
    LOC 1     Ground     Open     J1-21
    LOC 2     Open     Open     J1-38

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The harness circuit is correct. Proceed to test step 5.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is NOT greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness has failed.

Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    Stop.

Test Step 5. CHECK FOR SHORTS TO THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT.

  1. The disconnect switch remains in the OFF position.

  1. All related control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

  1. At the machine harness connector for the scraper's power train ECM, measure the resistance between the contacts of the location code and the +battery circuit.

    Table 2
    Location Code
    Hardware Location Code     Scraper's
    Power Train ECM
    Tractor's
    Power Train ECM
    Contact
    ET Location Code     2     1     -
    "LOC Enable"     +24 DCV     +24 DCV     J1-28
    LOC 0     Open     Ground     J1-22
    LOC 1     Ground     Open     J1-21
    LOC 2     Open     Open     J1-38

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The harness circuit is correct. Proceed to test step 6.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. The machine harness has failed.

Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    Stop.

Test Step 6. CHECK FOR AN OPEN HARNESS.

  1. The disconnect switch remains in the OFF position.

  1. All related electronic control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

  1. Measure the resistance between frame ground and the location codes.

    Table 3
    Location Code
Hardware Location Code     Scraper's Power Train ECM     Tractor's Power Train ECM     Contact
    ET Location Code     2     1     -
    "LOC Enable"     +24 DCV     +24 DCV     J1-28
    LOC 0     Open     Ground     J1-22
    LOC 1     Ground     Open     J1-21
    LOC 2     Open     Open     J1-38

Expected Result:

The resistance is less than 5 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The location code circuit is correct.

Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM is faulty. Exit this procedure and perform this CID FMI again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM. See Testing And Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    Stop.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. The machine harness has failed.

Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    Stop.
