Ether Starting Aid - The engine control module (ECM) controls the ether system in order to improve the cold starting capability. The ECM cycles the ether solenoid. The ether solenoid is on for three seconds before turning off for three seconds. The automatic ether injection system is disabled whenever the speed of the engine exceeds 500 rpm or whenever the oil temperature of the engine exceeds 0°C (32°F). |
Manual injection of ether may also be executed whenever the starting aid switch is depressed. Manual ether injection is disabled whenever the oil temperature is greater than 10°C (50°F). Manual injection is also disabled whenever the speed of the engine is greater than 1200 rpm.
Activate the manual injection of ether by pushing in the top end of the rocker switch. A premeasured amount of ether is injected three seconds after the switch is released.
Extra ether occurs if manual injection is attempted during the automatic mode. This will happen if the switch is depressed during the three second off period.
NOTICE |
---|
Inject ether ONLY while cranking the engine. Use the ether sparingly. Excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage. Use when temperatures are below 0°C (32°F) and for cold weather starting purposes only. After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Starting" for further information. |
