613C Series II Wheel Tractor-Scraper Caterpillar

Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change

Usage:

613C II 8LJ

NOTICE

Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material found in the Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations". Failure to do so could result in damage to the cooling systems components.

NOTICE

Mixing ELC with other products reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant life. Use only Caterpillar products or commercial products that have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specifications for premixed or concentrate coolants. Use only Caterpillar Extender with Caterpillar ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations could result in the damage to cooling systems components.

If ELC cooling system contamination occurs see the topic Extended Life Coolant (ELC) in the Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

If the coolant in the machine is changed to Extended Life Coolant (ELC) from another type of coolant, see Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".

  1. Stop the engine and allow the engine to cool.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Steam or hot coolant can cause severe burns.

Do not loosen the filler cap or the pressure cap on a hot engine.

Allow the engine to cool before removing the filler cap or the pressure cap.

  2. Open the access door for the engine compartment. Loosen the cooling system pressure cap slowly in order to release the pressure in the cooling system. Remove the cooling system pressure cap.

  3. Open drain valve (1) in order to drain the coolant from the cooling system. Collect the coolant in a suitable container.

  4. Flush the cooling system with clean water until the draining water is transparent.

  5. Close drain valve (1).

  6. Add ELC. Refer to the following topics:

    • Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations"

    • Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)"

  7. Start the engine. Operate the engine without the cooling system pressure cap until the water temperature regulator opens and the coolant level stabilizes.

  8. Maintain the coolant level within 13 mm (.5 inches) of the bottom of the filler pipe.

  9. Stop the engine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Pressure Cap - Clean/Replace".

  10. Close the access door for the engine compartment.
