Drive Shaft (Rear) - Remove and Install

Usage:

994D 3TZ

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Install the wheel chocks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Chock (Front and Rear) - Remove and Install".
  2. Connect the frame lock link. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Frame Lock Link - Separate and Connect".
  3. Remove the power train guard for the transmission. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Power Train Guard (Transmission) - Remove and Install".

  1. Open the door assemblies behind the cab. Attach a suitable lifting device to rear drive shaft (1). Remove bolts (2) that secure rear drive shaft (1) to the rear axle. Discard bolts (2). Do not reuse bolts.

  1. Remove bolts (3) that secure rear drive shaft (1) to the output transfer gear case. Discard bolts (3). Do not reuse bolts. Remove rear drive shaft (1) from the output transfer gear case. The weight of rear drive shaft (1) is approximately 98 kg (215 lb).

  1. Remove bolts (4) that secure spider (5) to rear drive shaft (1). Discard bolts (4). Do not reuse bolts. Remove spider (5) from rear drive shaft (1). Repeat the procedure for the other end of rear drive shaft (1) .

Installation Procedure

Note: Verify that all of the components of the rear drive shaft are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.

  1. Position spider (5) to rear drive shaft (1). Install new bolts (4) that secure spider (5) to rear drive shaft (1). Do not reuse bolts. Tighten four bolts (4) to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (391 ± 52 lb ft). Refer to Illustration 5 for the correct tightening sequence. Repeat the procedure for the other end of rear drive shaft (1) .

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device around rear drive shaft (1). Position rear drive shaft (1) to the output transfer gear case. The weight of rear drive shaft (1) is 98 kg (215 lb). Install new bolts (3) that secure rear drive shaft (1) to the output transfer gear case. Do not reuse bolts. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (391 ± 52 lb ft). Refer to Illustration 7 for the correct tightening sequence.

  1. Install new bolts (2) that secure rear drive shaft (1) to the rear axle. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (391 ± 52 lb ft). Refer to Illustration 9 for the correct tightening sequence. Close the door assemblies behind the cab.

End By:

  1. Install the power train guard for the transmission. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Power Train Guard (Transmission) - Remove and Install".
  2. Separate the frame lock link. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Frame Lock Link - Separate and Connect".
  3. Install the wheel chocks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Chock (Front and Rear) - Remove and Install".
