Cooling System Coolant (DEAC) - Change

Usage:

525 1DN

------ WARNING! ------

Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure.

----------------------

Note: This procedure pertains to Caterpillar Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant (DEAC) only. This procedure does not pertain to machines that are shipped from the factory with Extended Life Coolant (ELC) or to machines that are maintained with Extended Life Coolant (ELC).

NOTICE

Make sure you read and understand the information in the topics Safety and Cooling System Specifications for all information pertaining to water, antifreeze and supplemental coolant additive requirements before you proceed with maintenance of the cooling system.

Drain the coolant whenever the coolant is dirty or whenever foaming is observed.

  1. Open the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator. Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Close the drain valve. Fill the system with a solution which consists of clean water and cooling system cleaner. The concentration of the cooling system cleaner in the solution should be between 6 percent and 10 percent.

  1. Start the engine. Run the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine. Drain the cleaning solution into a suitable container.

  1. While the engine is stopped, flush the system with water. Flush the system until the draining water is clear.

  1. Close the drain valve.

  1. Replace the water temperature regulator.

Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Water Temperature Regulator - Replace" for the correct procedure.

  1. Add the coolant solution.

Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the capacity of the cooling system.

Note: If you are using Caterpillar antifreeze, do not add the supplemental coolant additive at this time.

  1. Start the engine. Run the engine without the cooling system pressure cap until the water temperature regulator opens and the coolant level stabilizes.

  1. Maintain the coolant level within 13 mm (0.5 inch) of the bottom of the filler pipe.

  1. Install the cooling system pressure cap. Stop the engine.
