Double Lip Crankshaft Seal Helps Stop Oil Leakage{1161,3300}

Usage:

All 3412 Marine Engines Equipped With 7231 Marine Transmissions

Description of Change: A new double lip crankshaft seal and wear sleeve are now used in the marine transmission mounting group on 3412 Engines. The new parts will help prevent the leakage of marine transmission oil past the crankshaft seal and into the engine oil sump.

Adaptable To: The new 5N5987 Seal Group is adaptable to all earlier 3412 Marine Engines equipped with 7231 Marine Transmissions.

It is our recommendation to use the double lip seal when the 7231 Marine Transmission is installed on the 3412 Engine.

To install the seal and wear sleeve on the crankshaft, use the procedure that follows:

1. Put Chevron S.R.I. (Superior Rust Inhibitor) on the seal lips.

2. Install the seal on the wear sleeve.

3. Use 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the inside diameter of the wear sleeve and the outside diameter of the crankshaft.

4. Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the inside diameter of the wear sleeve and the outside diameter of the crankshaft.

5. Install the seal and wear sleeve on the crankshaft as a unit as shown in the Service Manual Disassembly and Assembly section. The illustration that follows shows the correct position for the seal and wear sleeve on the crankshaft.

Correct position of seal and wear sleeve.
