SERVICE MAGAZINE, MAY 30, 1983, PAGE 9. Put a mark through the article, "Installation Procedure For Bowl, Bucket And Ripper Tips," on Pages 9 and 10. Write a reference to the article, "Be Careful During Installation Of Pins To Prevent Retainer Damage And Possible Loss Of Tooth Tips" in the September 22, 1980 Service Magazine on Pages 3 and 4. Use the information in the September 22, 1980 article during installation of the pins.

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

The installation procedure for bowl, bucket and ripper tips shown in the Maintenance Guides (or Lubrication and Maintenance Guides) has been changed. Formerly, the pin was installed through the side of the tip and adapter that was opposite the retainer. With this method, it is possible to damage the retainer because of the angle on the inside of the tip.

Use the method that follows to install bowl, bucket and ripper tips:

1. Make sure the adapter, pin and retainer are clean. Put the retainer in position in the counterbore of the adapter. Install the tip. See Illustration 1.

2. Use a hammer and a punch to install the pin through the retainer and adapter. See Illustration 2. Install the pin through the side of the adapter with the retainer.

NOTE: On some excavator buckets, the tips are too close to use this method. Under these conditions, it will be necessary to use the former method. Use caution when it is necessary to install the pin through the adapter from the side opposite the retainer.
