Start By:
- Remove the main drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Main Drive Shaft - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
- Remove the axles. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
- Remove the drawbar (if equipped). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drawbar - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin. Before installation or removal of any hydraulic test equipment, relieve the pressure in the hydraulic tank by slowly loosening the filler cap. |

NOTICE |
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

Note: Mark all lines, hoses, wires and tubes for identification purposes. Plug all lines, hoses and tubes in order to prevent foreign material from entering the system.
Note: Drain all fluids in a suitable container for storage or disposal.
- Drain the oil from the transmission and the bevel gear case.

- Remove bolts (1) and cover assembly (2) .

- Disconnect wire harness (3) from the cover of the transmission and the bevel gear.

- Remove jam nut (5) from harness connector (4) and push harness connector (4) through cover (7) .
- Remove bolts (6), cover (7) and the gasket.

- Remove cover (8) and the gasket from the rear of the transmission.

- Install Tooling (A) on the rear of the transmission, as shown. Fasten a hoist to Tooling (A) .
- Remove the bolts that hold the transmission and the bevel gear (10) to the main frame case.
- Install two 12 mm forcing screws (9) in the transmission and the bevel gear case. Tighten the forcing screws evenly. Separate the transmission and the bevel gears from the main frame case.
- Use the hoist and lower the rear of the transmission approximately 25.4 mm (1.00 inch). Pull the transmission and the bevel gears out of the main frame case until rollers (11) are at the end of the rail assemblies, as shown.

- Put a two ton floor jack (12) into position under the rear of the transmission in order to support the transmission when the hoist is removed.
- Remove the hoist from Tooling (A). Fasten the hoist with Tooling (B) to the transmission and bevel gear (10), as shown. Remove the transmission and bevel gear (10) from the machine. The weight of the transmission and bevel gear (10) is 492 kg (1085.0 lb).
- Remove the O-ring seal from the transmission and bevel gear (10) .

- Remove O-ring seals (13) and (14) from the main frame case.
