  1. Install Tooling (C), as shown.

  1. Install Tooling (D) so that the point of the dial indicator is against the inside race of the bearing cone.

  1. Use Tooling (C) in order to push the gear and the pinion downward. Hold the gear and the pinion in position by using Tooling (C). Use a ratchet wrench in order to rotate the gear and the pinion. Rotate the gear and the pinion at least three times. Observe the dial indicator as the needle moves. Stop rotating the gear and the pinion at the point of maximum needle movement.

  1. Zero the dial indicator. Mark the bearing race at the location of maximum needle movement.

  1. Pull the gear and the pinion upward by using Tooling (C). Rotate the gear and the pinion at least three times. Stop the gear and the pinion at the same point of maximum needle movement. Record the measurement on the dial indicator. This reading is the actual bearing clearance.

  1. Repeat Steps 23 through 25. The readings should be equal if you have correctly completed the procedure.

  1. Remove cover (28). Remove enough shims in order to obtain a bearing clearance (end play) of 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) to 0.15 mm (0.0060 inch).

    Illustration 17g00560793

  1. If bearing (31) was removed, install the bearing in cage (32) by using Tooling (E) .

  1. Use Tooling (D) and Tooling (F) in order to check the end play of the gear by using the following procedure:

    1. Push the gear downward and hold the gear by using Tooling (F). Rotate the gear by using a ratchet wrench at least five times. Stop rotating the gear at the point of maximum needle movement.

    1. Zero the dial indicator. Mark the location of maximum needle movement.

    1. Pull the gear upward by using Tooling (F). Rotate the gear at least five times. Stop rotating the gear at the same point of maximum needle movement. Record the measurement. This measurement is the actual end play of the gear.

  1. Repeat Steps 41.a through 41.c. The readings should be equal. The end play of the gear must be 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) to 0.15 mm (0.0060 inch).

    Illustration 23g00560829

  1. Install plate (37) in order to hold the gear and the pinion while the backlash is being checked, as shown.

  1. Put Tooling (D) into position with the point of the dial indicator against gear (8) .

  1. Use Tooling (D) in order to measure the backlash of gear (8) in three locations that are evenly spaced. The difference between the three measurements should not be more than 0.08 mm (.0030 inch).

    Illustration 24g00560831

  1. Add or subtract shims (38) in order to obtain a backlash of 0.20 mm (.0080 inch) to 0.30 mm (.0120 inch). Remove plate (37) after the backlash has been adjusted.
