  1. Check the connecting rod bearing clearances. Follow Steps 5 and 6 for the correct installation procedures and tightening procedures for the connecting rod bearing caps when the clearance check is performed. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bearing Clearance - Check".

Bearing clearance (new bearings) ... 0.062 to 0.160 mm (0.0024 to 0.0063 inch)

Maximum permissible bearing clearance (used bearings) ... 0.20 mm (0.008 inch)

  1. Lubricate the threads of bolts (1) and the seating faces of connecting rod bearing cap (2) with Tooling (A). Install connecting rod bearing cap (2) and bolts (1). Ensure that the number on the side of the connecting rod bearing cap is on the same side as the number on the connecting rod.

  1. Tighten bolts (1), as follows:

    1. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 90 ± 8 N·m (65 ± 6 lb ft).

    1. Put a mark on each bolt and on each connecting rod bearing cap.

    1. Tighten each bolt for an additional 90 ± 5 degrees (1/4 turn).

  1. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 in order to install the remainder of the connecting rod bearings.

End By: Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install".
