Inspection Of Equipment After It Has Been In Storage {0355}

Usage:

All Caterpillar Equipment

If equipment has been in storage for more than 3 months without correct preparation first, the steps which follow can be used to check the condition of the equipment before operation or before the recommendations for storage are used.

1. Inspect all external components for rust or damage. Areas such as cylinder rods, control levers, linkages, etc. must be carefully checked. The covers of some close areas such as transmissions and engine valve mechanisms must be removed and the internal components checked. All parts with rust or damage must be cleaned or a replacement made.

2. If the equipment has been in storage for more than a year, a replacement must be made of all filters.

3. All air and fuel tanks must be checked for water or rust. If water and/or rust is present, the tanks must be thoroughly drained and cleaned.

4. Lubricant must be put on areas shown in the Operation and Maintenance Guides.

5. The oil level in all compartments must be checked and oil added, if necessary. When these compartments are checked, be sure the dipstick (oil level gauge) is checked for signs of water. If water is present, the compartments must be drained.

6. Before the engine is started, shut the fuel off. Crank the engine, without starting the engine, for 15 to 20 seconds and/or until oil pressure is indicated on the gauge. Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. The starter must be permitted to cool for 2 minutes after each 30 seconds of cranking.

7. Start the engine. After the coolant temperature is in the normal range, check the operation of all the components. Make sure the components of the steering and brake systems work correctly before the equipment is moved.

8. Check all areas for leaks, especially those areas where rubber seals are used. The seals can stick to the shaft and damaged when the shaft starts to turn.

9. If the equipment is to be put back into storage, make sure the correct storage procedures are used.

Use the publications which follow to keep damage at a minimum during storage and start-up.
