Usage:
7211 Marine Transmissions Used With 3408 Marine Engines
Description of Change: A new flexible coupling group is used with 7211 Marine Transmissions installed on 3408 Marine Engines. The new coupling gives better control of torsional vibration between the engine and transmission, and must be used for any engine settings higher than 272 kW (375 hp) at 1800 rpm.
Adaptable To: The new parts are directly adaptable to 7211 Marine Transmissions 66X1000-Up installed on 3408 Marine Engines. The new parts can also be installed on earlier 7211 Marine Transmissions when the later ventilated (with air holes) front cover is used. See the article "Improvements Made To Marine Transmissions" on Pages 6 and 7 of the October 4, 1982 Service Magazine.
NOTE: At the factory, when the new coupling group is installed with a 7211 Marine Transmission on a 3408 Marine Engine, a rubber type vibration damper is used on the engine in place of the viscous type damper. This change is not necessary for field installation of the new flexible coupling group.
INSTALLATION: Correct installation of the coupling and other parts is very important. Some components are installed differently than similar components used in other common applications. For example, the 5N9317 Driving Ring (part of the transmission mounting group for 3408 Marine Engines) is installed with the body of the ring inside the flywheel, not toward the rear. Also, the twelve 2B947 Bolts which hold the 5N8972 Drive Plate to the 5N8970 Joint Assembly are installed with the bolt heads next to the flywheel. The illustration shows the correct position of the coupling parts.
