A nonfunctional input switch in the ECM software for the air conditioner controls in the above listed On-highway Truck Engines has been identified. An input signal to the ECM on the above engines is designed to force the cooling fan to operate when the air conditioner is running. This input has been identified as a nonfunctional signal. Therefore, the engine cooling fan will not operate when there is a high refrigerant pressure in the air conditioner system. This will result in overheating of the air conditioner compressor and failure of the air conditioner compressor.
Updated software for the ECM was released on 01December 2003 that will update the input switch for the air conditioner. This software update can be retrieved from the TMI system. The TMI data is the most accurate database in order to verify the software version for the required serial number. The latest software is available through the Caterpillar Service Information System (SIS).
