  • Introduction

A new flash file (232-9737) is now available for machines that are equipped with the Caterpillar Machine Security System (MSS). A summary of the changes is listed below.

Note: Caterpillar ET (version 2003A or later) is required for this flash file.

Time Zone Selection with Daylight Savings Time Support

Previous releases of MSS software did not have time zone information and would default to US Daylight Savings Time (regardless of geographical location). The new release of MSS software follows worldwide daylight savings time standards.

Improved Internal Battery Failure Detection and Handling

When the machine is turned off and disconnected from the battery source, the ECM's internal battery is used in order to maintain the list of keys and the Bypass schedule. The life expectancy of the internal battery is 10+ years. For security reasons, the internal battery cannot be replaced. Therefore, when a low battery voltage condition is found on the internal battery, the entire ECM must be replaced.

The new MSS software monitors the battery voltage and notifies the operator of a low battery voltage condition. The MSS software notifies the operator of a low battery voltage condition by alternately blinking the red and green MSS Status LED for ten minutes. At the same time, the MSS is permanently disarmed to prevent machine down time. The Status LED will continue to alternately blink red and green for ten minutes every time the machine is switched to the ON position (until the ECM is replaced).

Elimination of "E273 - Invalid Key Attempt" Event While in Bypass Mode

When MSS is in a Scheduled Bypass period, all keys (electronic and non-electronic) are considered valid. The previous software release would record "Invalid Key Attempts" in Bypass mode.

    Installation

Upgrade MSS Software from 220-6355 to 232-9737

    Procedure

    1. Connect the 160-0141 Adapter Cable As between the 171-4401 Communication Adapter As and the PC.

    1. Connect the 160-0133 Data Link Cable As between the 171-4401 Communication Adapter As and the diagnostic connector of the machine.

    1. With the key switch in the ON position, start Winflash and select "MSS ECM".

    1. Verify that the part number of the existing software is 220-6355 Machine Software Gp. If the part number of the existing software is Not 220-6355 Machine Software Gp, go to "Preserving the Key List and Bypass Schedule". Refer to Illustration 1.

Setting Time Zone, Date, and Time

Note: The information contained in this section is new and therefore is not included in the current Machine Security System Service Manual (RENR2462-04). Add this information to your copy of the MSS Service Manual.

Note: Changing the MSS clock requires a key (with master access level) or a factory password. When using a key with master access level, you must ensure that the MSS is not in the 30 second grace period before inserting the key. To determine if MSS is in the 30 second grace period, view the MSS Status LED. When the 30 second grace period is active, the MSS Status LED will be illuminated GREEN with the keyswitch in the OFF position.

    Procedure

    1. Connect a PC (with Caterpillar ET) to the machine via the communication adapter.

    1. Place a key (with the master access level) in the key start switch.

    1. Turn the key switch to the ON position.

    1. Start ET. Establish communications with the MSS ECM.

    1. Select the "ECM date/time" option from the "Service" menu. This will cause ET to display the screen shown in Illustration 3.

Note: In most instances, the time zone information will not be correct.

Preserving the Key List and Bypass Schedule

    1. Turn the disconnect switch to the ON position.

    1. Connect the Communications Adapter between the machine and the PC.

    1. Using a key with master access level, turn the keyswitch to the ON position. Verify that the MSS Status LED is green.

    1. Start ET and allow ET to connect with the CAT Data Link. If ET detects more that one ECM, select the ECM for Machine Security System.

    1. To load the data from the ECM, perform the following steps:

      1. From the menu bar, select "Service".

      1. From the "Service" menu, select "Copy Configuration".

      1. From the "Copy Configuration" menu, select "Fleet Key Configuration". If there is no recently loaded data available, the "No data is available..." message box will be displayed.

      1. Click the "Yes" button to load the data from the ECM. The "ECM Selector" dialog box will be displayed.

      1. If prompted, highlight the Machine Security System ECM and click on "OK". As the data is loading from the ECM, the "Please wait." message will be displayed. Next, the "Loading data from ECM." progress bar will be displayed.

      1. When the data has been successfully loaded into the ECM, the "The data has been successfully loaded." message will be displayed. Click "OK". The "Program ECM" and "Save to File" buttons on the "Fleet Key Configuration" screen will be enabled.

Note: The data must be saved to a file before you disconnect from ET or the data will be lost.

    1. To save the file, perform the following steps:

      1. Click on the "Save to File" button. The "Print New Document to File" dialog box will be displayed.

      1. If you do not have a file open, a dialog box will ask you to choose one of the following options: Open a File, Create a New File and Cancel. Choose the "Create a New File" button to continue.
