Installation Guide for Industrial Electronic Engine Displays Caterpillar

Messenger - Test

Usage:

C-10 BCX
Note: The Messenger display has a polarized lens. If the person that is viewing the display is wearing polarized sun glasses, the screen will appear to have black spots on the LCD. This is a normal condition.

Test Step 1. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring

  1. Turn the keyswitch to the "OFF" position.

  1. Check the following ECM connectors and wiring for damage or incorrect attachment.

    • 3412E connectors that are J1/P1, J2/P2, and J3/P3

    • 3126B, C-9, C-10, C-12, C-15, and C-16 connectors that are J1/P1, J2/P2, and J61/P61

  1. Check for the correct installation of the wires for the J1939 data link. Refer to Installation Guide, "Wiring (J1939 Data Link)" for additional information.

  1. Check the following components for abrasion, corrosion, or incorrect attachment.

    • Messenger display

    • Wiring

  1. Verify that the -battery connections are secure and free from corrosion.

  1. Verify that the belts and all connections for the charging system are secure and tight.

Expected Result:

All connectors, pins and sockets should be completely coupled and/or inserted and the harness and wiring should be free of corrosion, abrasion or pinch points.

Results:

  • OK - Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • Not OK -

Repair: Perform the following repair:Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.

    Stop.

Test Step 2. Verify Proper Installation

  1. Verify that the terminating resistors are installed on the ends of the data link.

  1. Disconnect J1 and measure the resistance between the connection for the J1939 Data Link + and the connection for the J1939 Data Link -. Refer to Table 1 for pin numbers.

    Table 1
Pin Numbers for J1 ECM Connector
Engine     J1939 Data Link +     J1939 Data Link -     Shield
    3126B, C-9, C-10, C-12, C-15, & C-16     Pin 50     Pin 34     Pin 42
    3412E     Pin 16     Pin 10     Pin 15

Expected Result:

The range of the resistance is 57 Ohms to 63 Ohms.

Results:

  • OK - Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • Not OK - The range of the resistance is 114 Ohms to 126 Ohms. A terminating resistor is missing.

Repair: Install the missing resistor.Refer to the engine Schematic in order to determine the missing resistor.

    Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • Not OK - Resistance is less than 50 Ohms. Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • Not OK - Resistance is greater than 130 Ohms. Proceed to Test Step 4.

Test Step 3. Check Terminating Resistors

Verify that only two terminating resistors exist on the data link. One resistor should be located on each end of the data link.

For additional information, refer to the Installation Guide, "Component Installation". In addition, refer to the engine Schematic.

Expected Result:

One terminating resistor is correctly installed at each end of the data link.

Results:

  • OK - Proceed to Test Step 4.

  • Not OK -

Repair: Ensure the proper installation of the terminating resistors.

    Stop.

Test Step 4. Check for a Short Circuit

  1. Disconnect the J1 ECM Connector.

  1. Remove the terminating resistors from the J1939 Data Link harness.

  1. Disconnect the Messenger display.

  1. Set an ohmmeter to the 20k Ohm scale and measure the resistance between the following pins. Use Table 1 for pin numbers.

    • J1939 Data Link + and + Battery

    • J1939 Data Link - and + Battery

    • J1939 Data Link + and J1939 Data Link -

    • J1939 Data Link + and Shield

    • J1939 Data Link - and Shield

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 20k Ohms.

Results:

  • OK - Proceed to Test Step 5.

  • Not OK - A short exists in the wiring harness.

Repair: Make the necessary repairs.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.

    Stop.

Test Step 5. Check for an Open Circuit

  1. All connections should remain disconnected.

  1. Fabricate a jumper wire and short Pin 7 and Pin 8 of the 8-Pin connector for the Messenger display.

  1. Set an ohmmeter to the 200 Ohm scale. Measure the resistance between the pin for the J1939 Data Link + and the pin for the J1939 Data Link -. Refer to Table 1 for pin locations on J1.

Expected Result:

The resistance is less than 10 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - Proceed to Test Step 6.

  • Not OK - A open exists in the wiring harness.

Repair: Make the necessary repairs.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.

    Stop.

Test Step 6. Check the Messenger Display

  1. Reconnect the J1 ECM Connector.

  1. Remove the Messenger display and place the Messenger display near the ECM.

  1. Connect the cable for theMessenger display directly to the pin location on the ECM connector.

  1. Power up the ECM and the Messenger display.

Expected Result:

The Messenger display operates properly.

Results:

  • OK - The problem is in the wiring to the Messenger display.

    Repair: Make the necessary repairs.

    Stop.

  • Not OK - A Data Link error exists. The Data Link Error Message will appear if the Messenger display loses the Data Link signal or if the ECM does not have the correct software.

    Repair: Perform the following procedure.

    1. Connect the Messenger display to another engine.

    1. If the Messenger display operates properly on the different engine, replace the ECM.

    1. Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.

    1. If the Messenger display does not function properly on the different engine, replace the Messenger display.

    Stop.
