--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------
A new 6V114 Gauge Assembly is available to measure brake drums on the above tractor-scraper models. The gauge is calibrated (has marks) to measure brake drums that have diameters of 22" (558.8 mm), 26" (660.4 mm) or 30" (762.0 mm).
The gauge assembly has a rod which slides inside a tube, and a spring keeps both ends of the gauge in contact with the inner surface of the brake drum. The contact ends of the rod and tube are tapered to a point, and hardened for wear resistance.
6V114 Gauge Assembly in use.
For each different size brake drum, a different mark on the rod is visible (can be seen) through the window (opening) in the tube. The tube also has marks along the edge of the window, with an identification for the space between each mark. With the gauge in position across the center of the brake drum, the alignment of the mark on the rod in relation to the marks along the window shows the amount of drum wear, the correct size lining to use with a machined drum, or that the drum cannot be used again. The identification marks that give these indications are as follows:
-
- 1. Between the inner edge of the window and the first mark are the letters "STD". If the mark on the rod is in this space, use standard size brake linings.
- 2. In the space between the two marks, the gauge reads ".12 O.S.". This is an indication that .12" (3.2 mm) oversize (larger than standard size) brake lining must be used.
Window and marks on gauge tube and rod.- 3. For the space between the last mark and the outer edge of the window, the gauge reads ".25 O.S.". This indication is to use .25" (6.4 mm) oversize brake lining.
- 4. When the mark on the rod is beyond the window so it is not visible, the brake drum cannot be used again.
- 1. Between the inner edge of the window and the first mark are the letters "STD". If the mark on the rod is in this space, use standard size brake linings.
Information about visual inspection of brake drums, and procedures to machine the drums is given in the Guideline For Reusable Parts-Brake Drums, Form SEBF8035. Instructions for installation of oversize brake linings are given in Special Instruction Form SMHS6826-01, "Installation Of Oversize Brake Linings".
