Torque Converter, Transmission And Transfer Gears

Usage:

Separation Of Torque Converter From Transmission

start by:

a) separation of engine from torque converter, transmission and transfer gears

1. Remove the three bolts (2) and lockwashers to remove manifold assembly (1) and the transmission oil filter group as a unit.

------ WARNING! ------

Keep hands away from the brake chamber area until the parking brake chamber has been disconnected from the parking brake.

--------WARNING!------

2. Use shop air pressure of 70 psi (4.9 kg/cm2) or (480 kPa) to activate parking brake chamber (3). Remove the cotter pin and pin (6). Disconnect the air pressure from the brake chamber.

3. Remove parking brake chamber (3) and the bracket from the transfer gear case.

4. Remove brake drum (4), flange (5) and the brake shoe assembly from the transfer gear case.

5. Fasten a hoist to the top of the torque converter and transfer gear cases with tooling (A). Put the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears in a vertical position on blocks as shown. A second hoist is necessary to turn the unit.

6. Fasten a hoist to the torque converter (7) with two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts as shown. Remove bolts (8) and remove torque converter (7) from the transmission. The weight of the torque converter is 260 lb. (117 kg).

Connection Of Torque Converter To Transmission

1. Fasten a hoist to the torque converter housing with two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts.

NOTICE

Do not damage the seal ring on the end of the transmission shaft when the torque converter is installed.

2. Put clean oil on the O-ring seal and put it in position on the transmission. Put the torque converter in position on the transmission and tighten the bolts.

3. Fasten a hoist to the torque converter and transfer gear cases with tooling (A). Turn the unit in a horizontal position as shown and put it on blocks for support.

4. Put clean oil on the O-ring seals and install manifold assembly (1) and the transmission oil filter group on the torque converter housing.

5. Install the parking brake shoe assembly on the transfer gear case and tighten the four bolts that hold it.

6. Install flange (4), the O-ring seal, retainer and bolt to hold the flange. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 80 ± 5 lb.ft. (110 ± 7 N·m).

7. Put brake drum (3) in position and tighten the bolts to a torque of 42 ± 5 lb.ft. (58 ± 7 N·m).

8. Install brake chamber (2) to the transfer gear case.

------ WARNING! ------

Keep hands away from the brake chamber area when the air pressure is put on and released.

--------WARNING!------

9. Use shop air pressure of 70 psi (4.9 kg/cm2) or (480 kPa) to activate brake chamber (2). Connect the rod end to the brake shoe assembly with pin (5) and the cotter pin. Disconnect the air pressure from the brake chamber.
