920 & 930 WHEEL LOADER POWER TRAIN Caterpillar

Front Differential

Usage:

Remove Front Differential

start by:

a) remove front drive shaft and support bearing.

1. Drain the oil from the differential and both final drive compartments. The total capacity is 7 U.S. gal. (26 litre).

2. Put blocks in front and behind the rear wheels for safety and make sure the parking brake is engaged.

3. Put blocks between rear axle housing and main frame on each side of the machine.

4. Lift the machine and put tooling (A) in position under the axle housing as shown.

5. Remove the final drive covers and pull axles (1) out of the differential approximately 12 in. (30 cm).

6. Remove yoke assembly (2) from the pinion shaft.

7. Disconnect brake line bracket (3) from the differential carrier.

8. Put tool (B) in position under the differential. Fasten the differential to tool (B).

9. Remove the bolts that hold the differential in the axle housing and remove the differential. The weight of the differential is approximately 250 lb. (113 kg).

Install Front Differential

1. Fasten the differential to tool (A).

2. Put clean oil on the O-ring seal and install it around the differential carrier.

3. Put the differential in position in the axle housing and install the bolts to hold it. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 98 ± 7 lb.ft. (134 ± 10 N·m). Remove tool (A).

4. Connect brake line bracket (1) to the differential carrier.

5. Install yoke assembly (2) on the pinion shaft.

6. Push both axles (3) into the differential and final drives. If needed turn the wheels to get the axles in alignment.

7. Put clean oil on O-ring seals (5) and install covers (4) on the final drives. Make sure the flat surface of the planetary gear shafts are toward the outside or covers (4) can not be installed.

8. Lift the machine and remove tooling (B). Lower the machine to the ground. Remove the blocks from between the rear axle housing and main frame.

9. Fill the differential and final drives with oil to the correct level.

end by:

a) install front drive shaft and support bearing
