920 & 930 WHEEL LOADER POWER TRAIN Caterpillar

Rear Differential

Usage:

Remove Rear Differential

1. Drain the oil from the differential. The capacity of the differential is 3 U.S. gal. (11 litre).

2. Drain the oil from the final drives. The capacity of the final drives is 4 U.S. gal. (15 litre).

3. Remove rear universal joint (1) from the machine.

4. Put blocks in front and behind the front tires.

5. Disconnect brake line (2) from the rear axle housing.

6. Install a floor jack under the differential for support.

7. Fasten a hoist to each side of the main frame.

8. Remove the eight bolts and nuts (3) that hold the support brackets from each side of the main frame.

NOTE: The front bolts on each side of the machine can not be removed.

9. Lift the rear of the machine approximately 6 in. (15.24 cm). The weight of the rear of the machine is approximately 6,000 lb. (2700 kg).

10. Use the floor jack to pull the rear axle housing from under the machine. The weight of the unit is 2,100 lb. (945 kg).

11. Install tooling (A) under the main frame and lower the weight of the machine on tooling (A) as shown.

12. Put blocks in front and behind the tires and turn the differential in a vertical position with a hoist and use the floor jack for support as shown.

13. Remove yoke assembly (4) from the pinion shaft.

14. Remove the bolts, retainer (5) and the gasket from the pinion housing.

15. If necessary, remove seal (6) from retainer (5).

16. Fasten a hoist and remove the front support (7) from the pinion housing. The weight of the support is 75 lb. (34 kg).

17. Remove seals (8), seal ring (9) and bearing (10) from the front support.

18. Remove the covers and O-ring seals from the wheel assemblies.

19. Pull both axles (11) out of the final drives approximately 12 in. (30 cm).

20. Remove the bolts that hold the differential carrier in the axle housing.

21. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts in the pinion housing and fasten a hoist to the differential.

22. Use two 1/2"-13 NC forcing screws to loosen the differential carrier from the axle housing.

23. Remove the differential from the axle housing. The weight of the differential is approximately 250 lb. (113 kg).

Install Rear Differential

1. Put clean oil on the O-ring seal and install it around the differential carrier.

2. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts in the pinion housing and fasten a hoist to the differential. Put the differential in position in the axle housing.

3. Install the bolts that hold the differential and tighten them to a torque of 98 ± 7 lb.ft. (134 ± 10 N·m).

4. Install the bearing and the ring that holds the bearing in front support (1).

5. Use tooling (A) to install the seals in front support (1) with the lip of the seals toward the outsie as shown.

6. Fasten a hoist and install front support (1) on the pinion housing. Make sure the ring that holds the bearing in the front support is toward the front of the machine when installed.

7. Use tool group (B) to install the seal in retainer (2) with the lip of the seal toward the inside as shown.

8. Install the gasket and retainer (2) on the pinion housing.

9. Put clean oil on the lip of the seal in retainer (2) and install the yoke assembly on the pinion shaft.

10. Push both axles (4) into the differential and final drives.

11. Put clean oil on O-ring seals (3) and install covers (5) on the final drives. Make sure the flat surface of the planetary gear shafts are toward the outside or covers (5) can not be installed.

12. Fasten a hoist to both side of the main frame and lift the rear of the machine enough to remove tooling (C).

13. Turn the differential in the horizontal position with a hoist and use a floor jack to move the axle housing and differential in position under the machine.

14. Lower the machine and install the bolts and nuts (7) that hold the differential supports.

15. Connect brake line (6) to the axle housing.

16. Use tool (D) and remove (bleed) the air from the rear brakes. See HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM SERVICING in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.

NOTE: If necessary turn the rear wheels to make an alignment of the universal joint flanges.

17. Install rear universal joint (8) and tighten the bolts to a torque of 48 ± 8 lb.ft. (64 ± 11 N·m).

18. Fill the differential and final drives with oil to the correct level.
