PROBLEM
The existing master links may develop fatigue cracks at the root of the 1st tooth or in the bushing strap transition area. Failure of the master links may result in less than acceptable service life being achieved on certain D11T, D11R, and D11N Track-Type Tractors. |

In order to allow equitable parts availability to all participating dealers, please limit your initial parts order to not exceed 5% of dealership population. This is an initial order recommendation only, and the ultimate responsibility for ordering the total number of parts needed to satisfy the program lies with the dealer. |
ACTION REQUIRED
Caterpillar will participate to assure acceptable master link performance as long as certain guidelines and criteria are met. This program is intended to address dealer and user concerns for failures on machines operating in normal applications, equipped with proper track shoes, and not being abused. |
SERVICE CLAIM ALLOWANCES
0-36 mo |
NOTE: This is a 8.0-hour job
If there has been a previous repair, part age/hours will apply. Retain a copy of the previous repair invoice in the dealer's records for audit purposes, and specify repair date and machine hours in the "Additional Comments" section of the warranty claim. |
||||||
NOTE: Parts Needed and Service Claim Allowances are for one track. NOTE: An additional 0.5 hour per track is allowed to modify a standard track shoe in to a Joint 2 shoe, if required. NOTE: No labor allowed if replacing master links at bushing turn or reseal. NOTE: Bushing turn or reseal will be considered a complete track disassembly. At bushing turn or reseal, no participation for track seals, rubber stoppers, plastic facing rings, retaining rings (PPR), thrust rings, or plastic plugs will be considered for master joints since they are considered normal customer expense at bushing turn or reseal. |
PARTS DISPOSITION
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling. |
Repair master joints at the dealer track shop using the Shop Repair Procedure for Positive Pin Retention Track SEBF8546 and Shop Disassembly and Assembly of Single Tooth Master Links SEBF8621 for proper repair procedures. Use Guideline for Reusable Track Parts SEBF8558 to determine the necessary parts to replace. After repairing the master joints at the dealer track shop, the tracks should be returned with new master link bolts, thread compound, and proper instructions for installing the tracks on the machine. Use the following procedure to install the master link bolts when the tracks are installed on the machine: 1. Use compressed air and, if necessary, a pick to clean all dirt, debris, paint, and rust from the tooth profile and bolt holes in each split master link. 2. Clean the threads in the master links of dirt and debris using 423-8713 M36 x 4 thd tap. 3. The mating surfaces of both the pin and bushing end master link halves will become fully engaged with one another. There must be no more than 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) of misalignment between the sides of the forged surfaces of the pin and bushing end master link halves. If there is more than 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) of misalignment, the misalignment must be corrected before proceeding. 4. Apply 5P-3931 compound on the threads, body, and washer face of each master bolt before installation. 5. Install the master link track shoe. 6. Install the bolts in order to hold the master links together. Best practice is to start the bolts BY HAND to avoid cross threading. If the bolts do not turn freely, the binding or misalignment must be corrected before proceeding. 7. The new bolts use an M55 socket (136-5189). Pre-tighten all bolts to a torque of 1500 +/- 150 N?m (1100 +/- 110 lb ft) in the pattern shown in Image 1.1.1. Then turn each bolt an additional 90? +/- 5? using the same pattern. NOTE: To ensure proper master link life and bolted joint integrity, the specific torque plus turn must be properly followed. |
Image1.1.1 |
The track shoes used with the new single tooth master links have changed. The new single tooth master link shoe (shoe B) has a different bolt hole diameter and pattern than the former master shoe. Also, the shoe adjacent to the bushing end master links (shoe C) has wider mud notches than the other standard track shoes (shoe A) to prevent interference with the wider single tooth master links (link D). This shoe is referred to as the Joint 2 shoe. See Image 1.2.1. |

A standard track shoe can be modified in to a Joint 2 shoe as shown in Images 1.3.1 and 1.3.2, if required. |
