3606, 3608, 3612 and 3616 Engines and C280-12, C280-16, C280-6 and C280-8 Marine Engines Standby Pump Panel Caterpillar

Wiring

Usage:

3616 1FN
The supply voltage can be up to 250 VAC or 24 VDC. The following components must be compatible with the supply voltage: motor starter coil, lamp that is indicating normal conditions and lamp that is indicating that the standby pump is running.

The starter circuits in the standby pump can be in separate panels or the circuits can be built into one large panel. 16 AWG wire should be used to wire the control circuit. Use the circuit below as a guide for wiring the starter circuit for the standby pump.

Note: The wire insulation should be in accordance with applicable local codes.

Note: Both contacts for low oil pressure at low speed and low oil pressure at high speed can be wired in parallel in order to control a single oil pump.

The manual start push button can be used to manually start the standby pump for the given system. Push the stop button in order to stop a standby pump that is running.

When the lamp that indicates normal conditions is on, the pump will remain off. However, if the lamp that indicates normal conditions is off the standby pump will restart when you release the stop button.

The lamp that indicates a normal condition will be illuminated, whenever the pressure in the monitored system is normal.

Whenever the standby pump is running, the lamp that indicates that the standby pump is running will illuminate. The standby pump can be operated by the set of contacts for auto start in the standby pump panel, or the push button for manual start. The push button that is used for manual starting is found on the control panel for the standby pump.

Table 2
Lamp that indicates that the standby pump is running     Lamp that is indicating normal conditions     Indication
On     Off     The standby pump is running. The standby pump was initiated by the standby pump panel.
On     On     The standby pump is running. The standby pump was initiated manually.
Off     On     Normal
Off     Off     There is an abnormal indication. Troubleshoot lamps, wiring, and circuit operation.

Note: An extra set of normally open contacts from each of the motor starters of the standby pumps should be wired in parallel. In order to indicate that the standby pump is running, connect an indicator to these contactors. A spare input (alarm) can be used in the engine control panel. Refer to the Systems Operation, RENR2493, "3606,3608,3612 and 3616 Engines Engine Control Panel" for more information. In the marine monitoring system II, you can use a spare digital input in order to connect the contacts that are normally open. Refer to the Systems Operation, RENR2490, "Marine Monitoring System II for 3600 Engines" for more information.

Power Wiring for the Starter of the Standby Pump

The power wiring for the starter of the standby pump is not shown. The motor starter needs to be compatible with the supply voltage that is used for the motor. The motor starter should also be compatible with the size of the motor that is used.

Note: The wiring should be done in accordance with any local codes.
