Caterpillar has been receiving a high percentage of returned injection actuation pressure control valves and HEUI pumps that have tested with no faults or failures. Test data shows that the quality of the oil is important for proper operation of the HEUI fuel system. The following conditions may occur from poor oil: surging, erratic injection actuation pressure (fault code 164-11 or 164-02), rough running and low injection actuation pressure.

In the Electronic Troubleshooting Guide, several troubleshooting steps have been added and modified. Refer to the Injection Actuation Pressure Test section. Always maintain the oil at the proper level. It is also important to maintain quality oil. The oil specifications are described in the vehicle operation and maintenance manual. In addition, discretion must be used with extended oil drain intervals. This will maximize the life of fuel system components.

Use fuel consumption, distance (odometer), service hours, or calendar time, whichever occurs first, in order to determine the maintenance intervals. Engines that operate in severe operating conditions will require more frequent maintenance. Refer to the truckOperation and Maintenance Manual for more detail.
