  1. The connecting rods have numbers that are stamped on the side of the connecting rod with the tab slot. Numbers are also stamped on the bearing caps. The numbers on the bearing cap should be on the same side as the numbers on the connecting rod. Install the connecting rod and the piston in the engine with Surface (D) against the crankshaft. Install the connecting rod and the piston in the engine with Surface (C) against the other connecting rod. Be sure to install the connecting rod and bearing cap with this orientation.

  1. Pull the connecting rod on the crankshaft.

Note: Refer to Guideline For Reusable Parts, SEBV0544, "Engine Bearings and Crankshafts" for complete details concerning measuring of connecting rod bearing clearances.

  1. Check the connecting rod bearing clearances with Tooling (A) . Put Tooling (A) on the connecting rod bearing surfaces.

  1. Put clean engine oil on the connecting rod bolt threads. Install the connecting rod bearing cap on the connecting rod. The number on the side of the connecting rod bearing cap is on the same side as the number on the connecting rod. Tighten nuts (3) on the connecting rod bearing cap (2) to a torque of 82 ± 8 N·m (60 ± 6 lb ft). Put a mark on each nut and on each connecting rod bearing cap (2) . Tighten each nut for an additional 120 ± 5 degrees.

  1. Remove connecting rod bearing cap (2) . Measure the thickness of Tooling (A) . Remove Tooling (A) from the connecting rod bearings. This measurement is the connecting rod bearing clearance. The connecting rod bearing clearance must be 0.071 to 0.168 mm (0.0028 to 0.0066 inch) with new connecting rod bearings. Maximum clearance with used connecting rod bearings is 0.25 mm (0.010 inch).

  1. Put clean engine oil on the connecting rod bolt threads. Install the connecting rod bearing cap on the connecting rod. The number on the side of the connecting rod bearing cap is on the same side as the number on the connecting rod. Tighten nut (3) on the connecting bearing cap (2) to a torque of 82 ± 8 N·m (60 ± 6 lb ft). Put a mark on each nut and on each connecting rod bearing cap (2) . Tighten each of the nuts for an additional 120 ± 5 degrees.

  1. Repeat Steps 1 through 8 in order to install the remainder of the connecting rods.

End By: Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install".
