New Caterpillar Digital Ignition System (CDIS) Provides Improvements Over Magneto Systems {1550, 1552}

Usage:

Engines: G3406 (S/N: 4FD; 1RK; 5NW)

Description of Change: The new CDIS has replaced the former magneto ignition systems on these engines. The new CDIS is more reliable than the former magneto ignition systems. The new CDIS provides the following improvements:

Reliability that is increased
More uniform timing between cylinders
Full ignition power at cranking speed

The CDIS ignition controller must not be mounted on the engine. The ignition controller comes with a 6 m (20 ft) long wiring lead that is for remote mounting.

The new CDIS requires a separate 24 VDC power supply. New alternator kits are available for installations that do not have a 24 VDC power supply for the CDIS.

Note: The alternator can only supply power to the ignition system. The alternator cannot supply power to any other equipment.

Adaptable To: The table lists the following information: new CDIS group part numbers, former magneto ignition group part numbers and new alternator groups that are included on production engines. The part numbers for both standard applications and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) applications are listed. The individual components of the former magneto groups will continue to be available for parts service.

These part numbers are not available for parts service at the group level. Consult the applicable Parts Manual for the individual components of these groups.

The new CDIS is effective with G3406 (S/N: 4FD2141-UP; 1RK100-UP; 5NW1-UP) Engines. The new CDIS is adaptable to G3406 (S/N: 4FD1-2140; 1RK1-UP) Engines. Kits will be released in order to allow the conversion from magneto systems to the CDIS.

The Reference Special Instruction provides a mounting procedure for the ignition controller. This special instruction will be shipped with each new engine. This special instruction also provides information about the ignition timing adjustment and ignition system troubleshooting.
