Fuel in Engine Oil

Usage:

3406C 8PN
Note: Refer to Truck Engine News, SEBD6568 January 1987, "Fuel Dilution Troubleshooting Procedure" for information on testing the components of the fuel system.

Probable Causes

  • Loose fuel line

  • Fuel injector nozzle

  • Fuel transfer pump

  • Fuel injection pump

Recommended Repairs

Loose Fuel Line

Visually inspect the fuel lines under the rocker arm cover. Tighten the fuel line nuts to 40 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb ft).

Fuel Injector Nozzle

A loose purging screw can cause fuel to leak into the engine oil. Inspect the purging screw for leaks. Tighten the purging screw to 1.6 ± .4 N·m (14 ± 4 lb in).

Fuel Transfer Pump

Check the fuel transfer pump for an internal leak. A internal leak past the pushrod will allow fuel to enter the crankcase. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "3406C Diesel Truck Engine".

Fuel Injection Pump

Internal leakage of the fuel injection pump can cause dilution of the engine oil. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "3406C Diesel Truck Engine".
