New heavy-duty water pump seal assemblies are available for these engines. The new seal assemblies can be used as service replacements for engines in the field. The new heavy-duty seals are more compatible with the following liquids: poor quality coolant, sea water and river water. The new seal assemblies are more resistant to engine vibration. In addition, the new seals are more tolerant of rough installation. The new seal assemblies will provide increased service life.
The part numbers for the new seal assemblies are listed in Table 1.
Note: In order to install the new heavy-duty seals on current water pumps, modifications must be made to the water pump shaft. The modification procedure is listed below.
New Seal Assemblies and Related Parts     | |||
New Seal Assembly Part No.     | Application     | Water Pump Part No.     | Pump Shaft Part No.     |
189-0609     | Auxiliary Sea Water Pump     | 7E-4358 130-0475 130-0477     |
170-6676     |
189-0610     | Jacket Water Pump or Aftercooler/Oil Cooler Pump     | 7E-3172 7E-8179     |
170-6678     |
Note: The carbon seals will continue to be used for production engines.
Modification Procedure
- Refer to the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly Manual. Remove the water pump from the engine.
- Disassemble the water pump.
- Refer to Illustrations 1 and 2. Machine the three drill points in the shaft. These drill points will be used to locate the set screws for the new seal assembly.

This illustration shows the location of the drill points (V) on the shaft. View A-A is shown in Illustration 2. Dimension (B) is 150.73 ± 0.38 mm (5.934 ± 0.015 inch) for the 170-6676 Shaft. Dimension (B) is 127.21 ± 0.38 mm (5.008 ± 0.015 inch) for the 170-6678 Shaft . |
Illustration 2 | g00691990 |
This illustration shows View A-A of the shaft. The holes (V) must be equally spaced around the circumference of the shaft (120 degrees apart). The holes should be 5.5 ± 0.5 mm (0.22 ± 0.02 inch) in diameter. The holes should be 1.0 ± 0.5 mm (0.04 ± 0.02 inch) deep. |
- After machining the shaft, remove all burrs and sharp edges from the shaft.
Note: An O-ring must slide over the drill points. The surface finish of the shaft must be smooth. The surface must also be free from nicks and grooves.
- Begin assembly of the water pump. To install the seal, follow Steps 6 through 14.
- Use a dial indicator to check the end play of the shaft. The shaft end play must not exceed 0.12 mm (0.005 inch).
- A container of silicone lubricant is supplied with the seal assembly. Use a small amount of silicone lubricant to lubricate the following components: the O-ring on the stationary seal ring and the bore of the pump housing.

This is a view of the seal assembly. Dimension (C) is 42.4 mm (1.67 inch) for the 189-0609 Seal Assembly. Dimension (C) is 43.9 mm (1.73 inch) for the 189-0610 Seal Assembly . (S) Set screw (X) Rotating Seal (Z) Stationary Seal Ring |
- Install the stationary seal ring in the housing. Install the seal ring so that the unlapped side is facing away from the impeller. The unlapped side is marked with four lines or with an "X". Make sure that the lapped face is clean and dry.
- Use 169-5464 Quick Cure Primer to clean the set screws and the threads of the rotating seal.
- Lubricate the shaft with a small amount of silicone lubricant.
- Apply Loctite 222MS Thread Lock to the three set screws.
- Install the rotating seal on the shaft.
- Align the set screws with the drill points on the shaft.
- Tighten the set screws evenly.
- Complete the assembly of the water pump.

Note: Use a dial indicator to check the radial runout of the shaft at the seal. The maximum allowable radial runout is 0.030 mm (0.0012 inch).
- Install the water pump.
