Description of Change: The design of fuel/water separators that are made by Caterpillar were introduced during the second quarter of 2002. These fuel/water separators were also used to retrofit older machines.

Fuel leaks and air in the fuel system through the following areas:

  • Cracked fuel/water separator bowls

  • Seals for the fuel/water separator bowl

  • Drain valve for the fuel/water separator bowl

  • "STOR" plug for the fuel/water separator bowl

Fuel leaks and air that enters the fuel system can result in short injector life. Fuel leaks and air in the fuel system can also cause intermittent low power or hard starting issues. This issue does not cover plugged fuel filters and lines due to contamination or presence of water in the fuel. This issue does not cover problems that are associated with the priming pump. These separate related issues may result in same symptoms. Example, hard starting, low power, and problems with injectors

Adaptable To: The following 270-5320 Bowl replaces the current 173-7126 Bowl.

Bowl Assembly

(1) Hex plug

(2) Drain valve

(3) Protrusion

(4) Bowl

(5) O-ring seal

(6) O-ring seal

(7) O-ring seal

Note: The drain valve (2) is not a serviceable part. The drain valve (2) was redesigned in order to accept standard 5F-9144 O-Ring Seal (6) and 8F-7219 O-Ring Seal.

A protrusion (3) was added for extra support on the bottom of the bowl. The protrusion (3) will provide added support in order to avoid cracking during removal and installation. The new bowl assembly uses a 9S-8004 Plug with a low profile (1). The new plug can be removed and installed by the use of an allen wrench. The new plug uses a 3J-1907 O-Ring Seal.
