发动机运转过程中，气门系统部件控制进气和燃料流入气缸，排气流出气缸。

曲轴齿轮通过惰齿轮驱动凸轮轴齿轮。 凸轮轴与曲轴必须正时合拍，以便在活塞运动和气门运动之间获得正确的关系。
每个气缸凸轮轴有两个凸轮轴凸尖 (8) 。 凸轮轴旋转时，凸轮轴凸尖使气门挺柱 (7) 和推杆 (5) 上下运动。
推杆移动摇臂 (1) 。 摇臂的运动引起气门桥 (2) 在气缸盖定位销上上下移动。 这种运动使气门 (6) 工作。 气门桥使一个摇臂能够同时操作两个气门。 某一缸都有两个进气门和两个排气门。
在发动机运转时，气门转动器 (3) 转动气门。 气门转动使气门上的积炭保持最少。 这样使气门的寿命更长。
当气门挺柱 (7) 向下运动时，气门弹簧 (4) 使气门关闭。
对于使用填埋气的发动机，气门配备了阀杆密封。
