Safety Messages

Usage:

3608 1ZD
There may be several specific safety messages on your engine. The exact location and a description of the messages are reviewed in this section. Please become familiar with all of the messages.

Ensure that all of the messages are legible. Clean the messages or replace the messages if the words cannot be read or if the illustrations are not visible. Use a cloth, water, and soap for cleaning the messages. Do not use solvents, gasoline, or other harsh chemicals. Solvents, gasoline, or harsh chemicals could loosen the adhesive that secures the messages. The messages that are loosened could drop off of the engine.

Replace any safety message that is damaged. Replace any safety message that is missing. If a message is attached to a part of the engine that is replaced, install a new message on the replacement part. Your Caterpillar dealer can provide new messages.

Do not operate or work on this engine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact any Caterpillar dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.


The safety messages that may be attached on the engine are illustrated and described below.

Barring Device

The safety message for the barring device is located on the guard of the barring device.

Guards must be in place prior to operating barring device motor.

Remove all hand tools prior to operating barring device motor.


Crankcase Covers

The safety message for the crankcase covers is located on the crankcase covers.

------ WARNING! ------

Flash fire may result in personal injury, if crankcase covers are removed within fifteen minutes after emergency shut down. Do not restart engine until cause for shutdown has been corrected.


Engine Lifting

The safety message for engine lifting is located on the inspection covers for the pushrods. The message is applied to the covers for the numbers 1, 3, 5, and 7 cylinders.

Improper lift rigging can allow unit to tumble causing injury and damage.


If improper equipment is used to lift the engine, injury and damage can occur. Use cables that are properly rated for the weight. Use a spreader bar and attach the cables according to the information on the safety message.

Engine and Generator Lifting

The safety message describes lifting of the engine and lifting of the engine and the generator. The message is located on the inspection covers for the pushrods. The message is applied to the covers for the number two cylinder, the number four cylinder, and the number seven cylinder.

High Voltage (Jacket Water Heater)

The safety message for high voltage (jacket water heater) is located on the cover of the switch for the jacket water heater.

Power source must be disconnected before working on equipment.

Failure to disconnect power source could result in injury or death.


Pinch Point (Linkage)

The safety message for the pinch point (linkage) is located on the side of the engine below the governor actuator or next to the governor actuator.

The movement of the linkage can form a pinch point. This can cause personal injury. Keep hands away from the linkage.
